In related news, Kellyanne Conway is really upset that her "alternative facts" line is what people picked up on during her media appearances last week. Because when the President's lackey goes on television during his first weekend in office to make petty arguments about the number of people at the inauguration, you're not supposed to pay attention to her doublespeak.

I'm not really sure where she was going with the health insurance thing. Is she suggesting that the new administration's plan to repeal and fuck poor people is somehow going to help them? I guess losing affordable healthcare is what will cause those people to finally pull themselves up by their bootstraps.

"Ripped them a new one" is a creative interpretation. Or just an alternative one, maybe.

Thoughts on The Donald's SC nominee?

I need to read up on this.

I have a feeling that he won't get confirmed anytime soon. If the Democrats actually grow a pair and get revenge for blocking Garland, we might not have a 9th justice until another seat opens up and both of them can be confirmed at the same time.

But still, they'll most likely be right wingers.

I'm kind of hoping that the Democrats hold up the appointment for at least eight months just on principle.
They will eventually have to give in somehow but giving the Republicans a taste of their own medicine is only fair.

    Speaking of resistance...

This account purports to be rogue White House staff. It is sort of like walking by a closed door and hearing familiar voices inside, catching snippets of convo. Except the guys talking and often yelling are running the country.

He's the guy that the Republicans will love, a replacement for Scalia.
I see zero point in trying to deal with this right now. Republican majority made it clear that there is no rush--at all--to install a new Supreme. Trump making this choice this early in his administration is unprecedented and not necessary. As big as it is, it is not the biggest fish to fry right now.

While I doubt the Democrats will get their act together, they should demand Trump nominates Marrick Garland the next time a seat is open to get any nominee through. It would make the 2018 senate race much harder for the red state Democratic senators though.

The Democrats have limited ability to block appointments. Even pre-election there was muttering that the GOP might invoke the nuclear option if they tried.

Donald Trump will not listen to any demands. Why should he? In the fantasy land he lives in, he has a mandate from the people to do whatever the hell he wants.

Merrick Garland will not be a supreme court justice. Neil Gorsuch will be. And at only 49 years old, he's potentially going to hold that position for decades to come.

Better hope Ruth keeps her health up.

    Presidents come & go.
    Political power changes hands.
    Policies change with the above.

Supreme Court justices can serve for decades.

I'm tempted to change the title of this thread to "Bannon – How's he doing??"

Anyway, it's been—unsurprisingly—a dumpster fire since inauguration, and there is absolutely no sign of it getting any better. It can only get worse, it seems, and it's starting to show now that Trump is turning his attention to foreign relations. I mean, hanging up on the Australian PM is one thing, but putting Iran "on notice" is ominous, especially when it happened the same day Rex "Texas Tea" Tillerson was confirmed as Secretary of State.

Anyway, I have to be careful in this thread, or I might get too ranty.

    Please do rant.
I'm living in a world of regret that I did not sooner step up to the plate and apply for American citizenship. I didn't vote. I didn't do enough to stop this.

I didn't contribute to this thread at first because the title of it makes me want to scream. It seemed self-evident "how" Trump would do.

He would do stuff "without sufficient intelligence."

US military officials: Trump-ordered raid in Yemen that killed US Navy SEAL was approved 'without sufficient intelligence'

So to anyone that would shut you down from getting "ranty" about the Trump presidency I would say:

He at least went to see the fallen soldier when the casket returned... Fox News and the conservative media will focus on that.

He also threatened to invade Mexico to find the "bad hombres"... but that doesn't matter.

    Exactly! What a fookin patriot!
And as per usual we (the people, the press) focus on the lone American casualty but non-American civilians, including kids killed, whatevs.

Edit/As a Canadian child who moved to the US in late 1965--just as the Vietnam war escalated, the press pointing out the Americans killed and skipping past all the other human beings extinguished has long puzzled me and torn at my heart.
Fact is, we've long had an America first attitude. Trump took it straight to the bank.

His behaviour is so outlandish and his choice of words are blatantly unhinged. I am really wondering why some republicans are not crying out to to get him removed. People still think this is sane behaviour for a POTUS?

    It _is_ clearly unhinged.
The only rationale I see for not stepping up is fear for one's own career, putting self before party and more importantly, before country.

OTOH, Trump has a 42% approval rating for the job he is doing as president. That means a lot of people are OK with what he says and does. Perhaps, as long as "the people" continue to support him, regardless of the insanity, the Republicans will too.

I agree with Fangirl. Congressional Republicans are not speaking out against him because their favorability ratings are even lower than his are. They realize that he appeals to their base more then they do, so if he were to publicly shame them on Twitter, they'd risk electoral losses in all their pro-Dump districts.

And as long as they play nice with him, he'll advance their agendas. It's the same reason why the religious right became much more accepting of him after the primaries.

I think the party faithful within the GOP are still flabbergasted that Trump actually won. Perhaps they were prepared to fight Clinton, not deal with Trump.

I cannot emphasize enough how shocked almost everyone was that Trump won. Still, hard to imagine that the Repubs didn't at least have a notion of what they would do should their party win. And yet nearly three months later they are sitting on their hands.

At age 70, Donald John Trump is the oldest man ever elected to a first term as president. Much speculation continues about how fit he is for the job. Yesterday radio shock jock Howard Stern, an NYC friend of Trumps for decades, weighed in.

"I personally wish that he had never run, I told him that, because I actually think this is something that is gonna be detrimental to his mental health too, because, he wants to be liked, he wants to be loved," Stern said. "He wants people to cheer for him."

Howard Stern: Trump wants to be loved, presidency will be 'detrimental' to his mental health

Meanwhile inside the White House today,
