This thread reminded me of this video I stumbled across on reddit /all earler today:

It's sad on either side if people are really acting out that way, for those reasons.

Most of my experience in talking about politics in "real life" around this election is finding out that about 80-90% of people on both sides were embarrassed to admit who they voted for. Online it is totally different. Part of it is the "safety" being behind a keyboard gives, but I also think that part of it is that people seek spaces online where most people feel the same as they do.

EDIT - Also, the Muslim woman in the University of Louisiana-Lafayette attack mentioned in the OP article has since admitted that she was lying and made the story up.

I think a lot of bloggers and people on social media are using anything they can to incite more discord from both directions. Sad to watch.

With the hashtags on the Internet, you can't use punctuation or it breaks the link. In this case, the point is not only the sentiment, but all to bring awareness to the movement

    I won't be wearing a safety pin.

If someone is being a total asshole, I may or may not step in to assist the underdog. It will always depend.

The safety pin movement started in Australia as a support for Muslims. It was "I'll ride with you." I believe in 2014.

    Then Brexit used it.

I recently saw it for an interview with Alex Smith of the Chiefs. He did it to show support for his children. A way of teaching them to help others. Meanwhile, he gets flamed for pussification of America ersumshit.

    Here's my take...

So Kaepernick sits down for the national anthem. Don't get me wrong - I had mixed feelings on that one as well. He was right to protest - but was that really a respectful way of doing it?

Now we have a safety pin movement. All you have to do to protest is put on a safety pin. It says that you are for treating all individuals in a kind manner. If someone asks - all you have to do is reply - I know, there are other takes on it - but the real thing to take away here is that I don't believe that people should be treated poorly.

    And people are protesting this?

Do you really need an object attached to you to show that you treat all individuals in a kind manner?

and what about those times when you aren't feeling 100% and someone just crosses you? what because you are wearing a safety pin you can't be assertive anymore?

You don't have to be on board with it - I'm just saying that it isn't disrespectful in any way. So why are people protesting it?

Wait - are you saying you can't be respectful and assertive at the same time?

I'm stating that people cannot tell the difference and because you disagree you must be an asshole or wrong. Either works.

People lack minimal critical thinking skills or just don't have the time to bother. Either also works.
