"Out of Curiosity" Projects

    So a few months ago I was looking for ideas of what I could make with a shiny new lab badge, a freaking SWEET shop to work in, and basically all the materials anyone could ask for. Well i have access to kevlar, aluminum, carbon fiber, boner joke-free stocks of wood, and steel. I'm going to research making bullet proof vests that are made out of composites (not ceramics like Dragonskin). Where does TFP's boredom and urge to build stuff take you? What do you make/experiment with? Any cool results? Any colossal/hilarious failures?

    Back in the late 90's before the masses had gigabit ethernet and fiber to the desktop, I got to play with it and test it out on a head end (starting point of where cable signal begins) and multicast to a number of desktops. We were trying to saturate our network and see just how much bandwidth we could absorb without impacting the regular email and database activities.

    We did a lot of stuff streaming movies, our own cable channels, and even from time to time porn. Little to no impact on our network.

    If you make a giant kevlar strap-on, perhaps we could market it to Chell... never mind.

    I've done some mixed experimentation. Some of which was artistic, e.g. I welded miniature animals, flowers, and stick figures out of leftover bits of filler wire and hardware, including a tulip that I gave to LBC for some holiday that was made of recycled IKEA spoons and some stainless TIG wire. Most else of what I've experimented with has been leftover bits of rigid insulation, wood, and egg-crate foam as acoustic panels/diffusers, some of which have been successful, some not so much.
