There was a great coffee shop in the Park Shops in DT Houston. They did everything fresh--no pre-brewed espresso, no bottled liquid chocolate, etc. It closed after business on a Friday because a Starbucks was going to open on Monday. I was pissed, never did set a foot in that Starbucks shop.

  6. Exactly ! Feels good to see someone who gets it. My family just calls me weird and an ass.....but I'm sure the last part is due to other reasons. :-p

There is a guy I've "known" online for 15-16 years. 12-13 years ago I had occasion to meet him in person. He welcomed me into his home and was incredibly gracious to my wife and I. Shortly after I met him in person he had a falling out with the online community we were both a part of. Some of it was his doing for sure, but most of it was just one of those things that happens......today I learned he died at 42 years of age. Not sure how yet, but it makes me sad. Even though he disconnected with the community due to hard feelings, he never treated me with anything other than respect.... :(

It gets a bit more sad.

I knew he had a drinking problem. He told me once that he went through 3-4 "handles" (1.75L bottles) of Captain Morgan's per week.

His cause of death was liver failure. At 42.

Holy crap. I drank very heavily, but not quite that heavily. I'm firmly convinced the only reason alochol didn't cause me to have serious health problems is I always ate. Even shitfaced I cooked and ate, most nights a reasonably decent dinner.

Forty-two is extremely young. Maybe your friend didn't eat much and/or had a condition aggravated by alcohol.

Thanks for the condolences all. It's been some time since I was in regular contact with him, but it is sad nonetheless.

Around the time that I first met him I ended up hanging out with him 4-5x over about a two year period. I don't know enough about his habits to know how/what he ate, just that he always had a huge Big Gulp cup in hand that was a giant Cap't and Coke. Some have suggested he had other vices, so maybe there was a compound issue with the alcohol that caused his liver to give out so young. I think sometimes there are people built who can't take the abuse they heap on themselves and others who are nearly indestructible despite their best efforts.

Many states offer religious exemptions for childhood vaccination, which is completely fucking retarded. So the new rule needs to be that you can have a religious exemption only with a note signed by god. Otherwise shut your pie hole and let the educated boys and girls do the thinking.

Not that I disagree about vaccination, but it wasn't too awfully long ago that "the educated boys and girls" were telling us that to be healthy we should eat lots of refined carbs and that TRANS-FATS were safer than other fats!

The old saying follow the money is often applicable. Who funded simple sugars and trans fats? The food industry. Who funds anti climate scientists? Big coal and oil. Who is trying to rewrite American history to downplay slavery and boost manifest destiny and sell Christianity? The Koch brothers. People are making money attacking good public health policy.

Genetics definitely play a huge role in our health. For the most part my relatives have lived long and healthy lives (my 78 YO mother is only on one precrip med).

Keith Richards, a man who has enjoyed many excesses for many years (and still smokes cigarettes the last I saw) has said what he's done to his body over the years could've killed several men.

Radical feminists piss me off. Tits don't automatically make you special or more deserving than someone without them.
