Has anyone else been watching Making a Murderer on netflix? Holy shit. I am through about 4 hours and it is fairly sickening to watch, at least what has been presented.

I haven't watched it, but several people actually recommended it to me just today. Including one who has lived in/around Manitowoc for decades. I'll probably at least try to watch it soon.

So... my woman called me a few minutes ago to relay this glorious news: She got to work and there was no heat in her classroom ("meatlocker") as well as many of the adjacent classrooms. Oh well, soldier on as required.

Later, she was in the middle of class today when she heard a dripping sounds from above the center of the room. The dripping escalated into a steady stream and suddenly a ceiling tile slammed down onto a desk.

A minute later half a dozen other tiles fell all over the room like something out of a low budget disaster movie. Slam! Splash! Several of the classrooms in that wing of the building are now flooded. WTF?

    ...

    How old are you, again?

    ...

We really need a plan to slow this down.

There's pretty substantial evidence that it will slow down on its own. Most modern population growth is happening in developing nations, so as they catch up to the world their birth rates are expected to fall to a point where population growth will level off. I think current projections put it at ~11 billion.

Dr. Hans Rosling has a website dedicated to this stuff at Gapminder: Unveiling the beauty of statistics for a fact based world view. . He does a really good job of creating data visualizations to help average slobs like me understand what's going on.

If you've got an hour to kill he also put out a documentary that (among other things) addresses this:

Don’t Panic – The Facts About Population

  6. I'm planning a Dinosaur Party for The Destroyer's second Birthday.

I'm thinking of getting this to wear:

My "not by marriage in-laws" already think I'm an alcoholic. I might as well dress the party.

I just realized that I'm reading some intensely complex plant research proposals and they make complete sense. Guess all that education has taught me something.

Just like every time Baraka tries to tell me the planet can "handle" more occupants: Just because humanity will reach the top of some bell curve doesn't mean the Earth can sustain it.

Plenty of scholarly future ecological disaster books to source here.

Simply put: The planet can handle more Indians than it can more Americans.

...but once the Indians get a taste of above-the-poverty-line, they want to be like Americans.

Either way, this statement does not make sense, as history shows. All cultures have demonstrated a love of conspicuous consumption. Indians and Chinese crave gold more than other cultures. And talk about a useless item, except as a symbol of wealth. The Taj Mahal was an extravagant gift to a wife. Everyone wants to accumulate shit. We as Americans just happen to be really good at it.

I thought by now we've done away with using indians to designate Native Americans.

Anyway, the reality is that the carbon footprint of the average Indian is a fraction of that of the average American. Sure, the Indian population is much larger, but the differences in lifestyle are astounding. Poverty is a big part of that, but it's also the broader culture.

I mean, who needs a home larger than 2,000 square feet?

What Is The Tiny House Movement? – The Tiny Life

If I didn't have a kid or another adult to deal with, I would be happy in a tiny house...if it were on lots of land with no tiny houses nearby.
