I think the more overarching problem is that Americans are used to getting virtually everything for really, really cheap.

    Like, really cheap.

    Really.

But thanks to globalization (yes, even education is an export) and rising markets elsewhere, America is running out of cheap sources for things.

Which segments of society do you think this hits the hardest?

And are feeling entitled to getting whatever they want.

The blue collar worker was the heart and soul of this country. Once.
    But we killed him.
Yet, we go on thinking things like, 'yeah, things are really tough right now but it will come around again without us really having to do anything about it.'
    But it's not.
We have to change not only the ways in which we spend our nation's revenue, but how we see ourselves, too.
And if we are not among the forefront of progress and leadership in the areas of technology, education and providing a reasonable level of well-being for our citizens, we are going to fail. And you're going to be doing shit-all with those dollars you saved for yourself while your country dies.
    Wake the fuck up, America.

Here's to advancement of American culture and subsequent change of attitude! *raises another imaginary, vodka-filled glass*

Many more people in the US need to develop the understanding mixedmedia displayed above and in its previous post.

"Especially" or "except"? I would imagine that if you take them out of their comfort zone, only then will they do something.

Does one really want to take action if one has a decent education, a mortgage on a decent home in a decent neighbourhood, two sensible domestic automobiles each less than 2 years old, a stable well-paying 9-to-5, weekend BBQs lubricated with one's favourite light beer, high-speed Internet pumping through Alienware technology, an Xbox and/or a Playstation 3, and two 60-inch TVs with 400+ channels?

What if those things are taken away, either piecemeal or all at once?

I deleted my threadjack for a reason (it's turning into the masturbation that is Tilted Politics in here), but if we're going there:

Poor wording choice (my forte) but I meant especially. We're (Royal We) short on sweat all the time (it's why we have maid services for those busy hard-working office parents), but especially when faced with sacrifices. Like being without electrical power for a few days. Somebody else do something. The more difficult the task, the less likely whitey is to actually do something to benefit the community. Donate $5? Okay. Donate your time? Hell no. That logic. Everybody has become so selfish because they don't know and don't care to know anybody outside their little circle. Where I grew up each single family home was basically an island. You waved at the stranger-neighbors but never really talked. People moved in, moved out. There was no investment in the community aside from policing up your trashy neighbors when their ragged yard started to ruin your property values.

It's kinda like: Ask whitey to give up a portion of their paycheck (that flatscreen TeeVee) so some stranger can go to school and become a doctor?

Typical answer: "Hah, go fuck yourself. I've got these bills to pay" (meaning: I've got beer to buy).

Yeaaah, I don't know where I'm going with this. Probably why I deleted it in the first place.

Eventually people will be forced out of their comfort zone. Unless they happen to have a billion dollars buried in the backyard under the bbq pit.

One of the things that contributes to that feeling of untouchability we seem to have is the vacuum effect. Nothing that happens outside of our own bubble seems quite really real. Yet.

I'm not immune to it and I am fairly broke. I go through my life everyday absorbed with my own survival and entertainment. But I have two possessions that threaten vacuums: awareness and imagination.

One of the things we've been discussing a lot so far in one of my education classes is the death of vocational education at the secondary level. Sure, we talk about art and P.E. getting cut, but we don't talk about voc ed getting slashed to the bone. Auto shop? Forget it--my old high school turned their auto shop into a computer lab. Anyone interested in voc ed has to sign up for classes at a center shared by all of the schools. This is becoming the common structure for vocational education in the United States. While this is a money-saver for schools and still allows them to provide voc ed at the secondary level, it's a hurdle for anyone interested in it. We don't truly offer strong vocational education programs until community college, and for students interested in learning a trade, that makes things difficult. How are they going to know about the options out there if they don't see them in high school?

Speaking to the OP, I would love loan forgiveness. It would free up a lot of cash I could spend on saving up for a down payment, or for a new car. I didn't anticipate having to find a job during a recession in which wages have remained flat while I'm up to my eyeballs in student debt. When we sign our MPN, none of us can see the future, and there are no guarantees that a college degree will enable you to find a job with a living wage. In a recession, that truth is much more painful.
