Come on, mate. Being a fan of bitter tastes is hardly a qualifier for a refined palate. Regardless, you're talking to a fan of liquorice. At least I learned not to have Rye bourbon with soda. *sarcasm*

I know it's a hazelnut cream, but it has chocolate mixed into it and has no bitterness.

But let me get this straight... Nutella as a Pretzel dip?

Yes, white chocolate is a bit of a misnomer. It doesn't have cocoa powder or chocolate liquor but does have cocoa butter (i.e. cocoa fat). I don't really consider it chocolate, because the content of cocoa-derived ingredients is so low (around 20%, according to Hershey's product) and it's only using the fat. I don't mind it though when it's used in certain desserts.

The same goes for milk chocolate too. I don't mind it as an ingredient in desserts, but when I want chocolate on its own, I want real chocolate.

I often eat chocolate bars in the 80% to 85% range in cocoa solids. I've had 90% too, I believe. However, when I want something a bit less intense, I have a 70% bar. Bitter/semisweet chocolate that is often used for baking is around 60% to 70%.

Milk chocolate? It tends to have less than 30% cocoa solids. It's not really chocolate if you ask me. It's more like chocolate-flavoured milk candy.

I should also point out that quality dark chocolate has only minimal ingredients besides cocoa solids. The 15% to 30% remainder in these bars should be stuff such as sugar and natural flavouring like vanilla beans.

HA! Thats funny. I just realized that dark chocolate has the same amount of sugar/vanilla as milk chocolate has cocoa solids! LOL!

It may not be a qualifier overall, but it's a part of the experience. Knowing how to delve into all the taste factors, even deep into one side over another is important to appreciate such things as dark chocolate. Bitter, salty, sour, sweet, etc., and combinations thereof are all realms I enjoy exploring.

I'll admit that bitterness isn't for everyone, but I enjoy it. This is why not everyone likes dark chocolate. That's fine. More for me!

It's basically sugar, fat, hazelnuts, cocoa, and dairy (in that order).

The commercial always makes me laugh because it's sold as something good for kids because of the "energy" it gives their day, along with healthy hazelnuts and milk, etc. It doen't mention that sugar and fat are the first ingredients.

Fucking right! It's a combination of salty and sweet and it's fantastic!

What's wrong with you!? Guinness is the dark chocolate of beer!

  8. When I was "new" to beer, I didn't like it because it was "too much." Now that I am more refined, I've had better dark beers, so it's not as good in comparison. I've been told if I go to Ireland I'll like it on tap there.

I like playing with the nitrous balls though. Ha, balls.

Hey, I get what you mean. I love exploring combinations of tastes. I've also loved tons of dessert concoctions which used large amounts of dark chocolate. But by itself? Nah, not my thing. Unless it has Orange mixed into it. See this:

Meh. I love eating Nutella with a spoon!

Will have to remember that one. Nutella and Pretzels, here I come!

Well, that certainly explains many things.

I too like some of the Lindt dark chocolate mixes. A couple I've enjoyed are the sea salt and the ginger. Of course, almonds are always a treat. Orange and chocolate isn't really my thing.

    Coffee or dark chocolate.

They just taste bad to me.

    Broccoli too, for some reason.

They are all of them bitter. (Broccoli when raw, in particular.)

Remixer, I apologize for the stupid disappointment post. I understand your position better now.

I didn't realize until coming back to this thread after a few hours sleep, how indoctrinated in the PC mindset by the media I've become. Plus, it doesn't help that I seem to have white-man's guilt, to just about everything now.

Even after all the different people from different backgrounds I've "met" on the internet over the years, I still forget how isolated I've let myself become in real life, and how naive I still am.
    Anyway, that's my hang-up, not yours. :)

Thanks. Now back to stroking your smooth spot, you. ;)

Damn it people, now you're making me want chocolate (the darker the better, although I also love white chocolate.) And Nutella (which is awesome on graham crackers, by the way.)

Um...hmmm. I don't like Starbucks. I've tried it a few different times, with different drinks, and I always end up disappointed. I love coffee, just not theirs.

  15. Seafood and sushi. Animals from the sea taste gross.
Beer. I don't know why I don't like it...I like wine and I like various hard liquors. I've tried to like it. I want to like it. I just...don't.
Romantic comedies. Because 99% of the time they suck.
Dogs. I used to be highly phobic. I've gotten over it a bit, but I still don't like them. And they smell.

Sugar! Why does everything have to be so damn sweet! There isn't one king of soft drink I like. The other day I had a Fruitopia and it tasted like a saturated sugar solution. I checked to see if sugar was crystalizing on the bottom like it does with maple syrup.
The people I work with like their coffee with tons of sugar (triple-triple). When they get me coffee sometimes, they forget and get regular. I can't drink it.
I drink orange juice and cut it 50-50 with water as its pretty sweet too.
I love dark chocolate and real dill pickles. Bread and butter pickles are too sweet and they're already sliced! I like to slice own pickles, thank you.
I love Guinness or bitters like Smithwicks. If that's not available I'll get a Rickards Red.
And why can't you get unsweeten iced tea in Canada? You can get most places in the states, why not Canada? One time, I was pissed and had them give me hot tea and a big glass of ice with a slice of lemon.

    Willravel Getting Tilted

I used to be in the exact same boat. I thought it was bitter and chalky and offensive. Then, a few years ago, my little brother bought my grandmother one of those K-Cup machines, the ones that make single-serving coffee from a little plastic cup with coffee grinds and a filter built in. It came with a sampler of a dozen or so different kinds of K-Cups. A few of them weren't just straight coffee, but were seasonal flavors like pumpkin pie. My grandmother has been a coffee purist since the 1930s, so she was only going to be drinking to regular coffee K-Cups. I tried the cinnamon roles coffee and it was delicious. It was barely even coffee, but it was amazing. Then I tried to pumpkin pie coffee and it was delicious. Then I tried Dutch chocolate. I ended up having like 6 cups off (very weak) coffee. Then I tried some Nantucket Blend and it was delicious. Fast forward a few years and I drink French roast and Southeast Asian blend dark, dark roasts every morning and it's delicious.

I think it takes the right introduction to really get coffee.

We have a K-cup (Keurig Breville) machine that looks like this:
We love it! Everybody can have what they want, like tea, cocoa, Chai tea, green tea, strong coffee, weak coffe or whatever.
This a good machine because the water is always hot and its fast! We got it cheap as it had a chip on the bottom you can't even see.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

There is also one with chili oil which gives a very pleasant warmth to the chocolate experience.
It's activating another sense that seems to enhance the chocolatey goodness.
I also really like the one with the sea salt.
