Food We need to talk about cooking and food prep tools and utensils.

    Not about a fat separator; being a largely vegetarian household, I wouldn't have much use for one. However, I am in love with Bettie, my red KA Pro stand mixer, and I have passionate feelings for my immersion blender.

    For what it's worth, it took 7 weeks; but 3 brand new Henkels knives showed up yesterday.

    I specifically told them that I did not expect this to be warranty and that I just wanted the handles replaced. New ones were easier, it seems. No cost to me, other than shipping.

    So I decided to invest in a knife that would last me for a while.
    I went for the Shun handcrafted Reserve 8" Chef Knife.
    Should be able to pass this baby down to my daughters.

    Can't reveal my sources but I've heard that Bettie is a bit of a slut and you're not the only one having feelings for the immersion blender.

  8. Ive said this before but i cannot see what anyone can do with 3 different knives that you cannot do with one, at least as far as cooking goes. I guess you could make the same argument why do i own 15 shirts when i could make do with 5 though... But ive owned the same bread knife that cost £10 for about the last ten years. It isnt mega sharp but the food doesnt taste much different once its cooked however you slice it.

    Slicing bread with a chef's knife isn't that great.

    I'd suggest you can get by with two or three knives.

    Chef's Knife
    Paring Knife
    Bread Knife (ieserrated)

    You could probably dispense with the paring knife and be just as happy.

    When you're really cutting stuff up trust me it makes a huge difference to have the right knife. Lets put it this way: You almost need to have your eyes open to know you're cutting a tomato with a quality blade. I would say the absolute minimum 5 items I need to have a functioning kitchen are two good knives, a soup pot, a wok, and a skillet or pan of some kind.

    It's about safety and precision. I can't cut bread with my chef's knife unless I want a terrible mess. Similarly, if I tried to cut a tomato and my chef's knife were dull, I'd end up with a terrible mess. My knife skills are much better because I use a good blade.

    Quality equipment that's easier and pleasant to use --> desire to use the equipment --> practice of skill --> better skillset.

    Due to that, I can get a meal on the table a lot faster than other people.

    Kind of as an aside to knives, I've been really loving my Kyocera mandoline lately. It's wicked sharp, as in take-your-fingertip-off-and-you-won't-know-until-the-blood-spurts sharp. Sure, I could achieve similar cuts with a knife, but I don't have the patience for that, especially when I can run a zucchini over the mandoline and get paper-thin slices.

    Two blades in my kitchen that scare me: The blade from the Kitchen Aid food processor and the mandolin blade.
    Scary sharp.
    I hate having to hand wash the processor blade in the sink because its irregular shape makes it so easy to slip.

  13. I can accept that you might have a knife that would cut a tomato into smaller and pieces with cleaner cuts than me, but if Im just going to cook it up and eat it it doesnt make much odds to me.

    I can maybe see the value in having two knives - a sharp one for meat and a normal one for anything else.

    I do understand people liking gadgets and if you enjoy cooking then maybe you would enjoy cooking gadgets... I just dont enjoy cooking that much I suppose. I dont very often cook for anyone but myself so I dont care much how what I cook turns out as long as its edible.

    I am not sure what you mean by "a normal one for anything else".

    First off, keep all your knives sharp. Dull knives are a danger.

    I understand that you don't like cooking and that gadgets are clutter. All you need is two knives.

    The reason to have multiple knives? Getting everyone in on the act of chopping! My 9yo loves to be in the kitchen and not with any special "kids" knife - he is using the utility knife from the block (which is his size) and it is sharp.

    Blunt knives are dangerous - you do way more damage to yourself and are much more likely to do so with a blunt knife.

    I taught both my kiddos how to use knives when they were young.
    It's a skill everyone should have.

    We just were given a Lodge cast iron griddle top for our gas range. It was a house warming gift. We are very happy with it!
