Pointless Announcements

Was having charging problems in my 196,000 mile Subaru. Got a remanufactured alternator, installed it in about 25 minutes. Ready for another few years now.

 

My laugh of the day: After I ordered food at a fast food placenot long ago today I heard "He looks like he is about to fall over" after she turned and started walking away....Thanks for the compliment but I was only halfway there. Took me a bit to process how many hours I had been awake when I thought about it, and the number was not bad for my Friday/Tuesday.

 

This evening, six of us played "Cards Against Humanity." First time for me. I won.

 

Well I don't read gossip rags or open emails from mu hippie aunt so im pretty sure I heard it from the lame stream media. I don't think the issue got much traction, might of heard mention of these rumors during standard reports on his campaigns progress. But it doesn't really matter as I could care less. I'd be much more interested if his criminal indictments had any real substance but last I heard they sounded like a waste of tax payer money..

 

One of my best friends has worked very closely with the Federal NDP party, to the point of occasionally socializing with Layton and now, Mulcair. She has some very good things to say about Mulcair.

I have traditionally voted NDP (Layton was my MP) and from what I can see of Mulcair (especially his performance in Question Period) I would support him as well.

The exciting thing is that the laws changed last year and I am eligible to vote in a Federal Election for the first time since I moved here.

I can't wait.

 

U.S. Laws have always allowed me to vote regardless wether I reside in the US. or abroad.

As a non-resident, for tax purposes, I was free form paying taxes, but also not allowed to vote. There was a supreme court challenge that changed this last year.

I just need to head over to the Canadian Consulate and register to vote. I am going to do that this week.

 

You don't have to pay taxes? Now I suddenly care less about you (kidding of course) I just wrote my year check, blah. I wouldn't mind paying taxes if we used more on things actually in the US not trying to solve ever world with some type of military action.

I pay Singapore taxes, just not Canadian taxes.

Well, I wasn't paying *any* Canadian taxes until I bought a condo this summer past. Now I pay property tax and non-resident withholding taxes on my rental income. But nothing on my income.

 

I just watched my recording of the Oscars and was much impressed with Lady Gaga's singing of the The Sound of Music medley. Kudos.

 

I pay US and Mexican taxes. In fact I'd bet I pay more Mex. taxes then I do US. The main tax here is sales tax and it is set up in stages base on the cost of an item in a group. If I buy a $200 T.V. I pay no tax on it. Now if I buy a $1500 T.V. It will cost me $2000 because they'll slap a .25% tax on it. Same with cars, buy a $3000 car tax is zip. The newer low miles/kilom Ford Escape cost me $20,000 and then they add another $10,000 in tax.

I understand the logic, luxury tax system? And I can't say I really disagree. But it really hurts at times making that wire transfer.

But I knew the way the tax system worked before moving here and no one forced me to move here,

 

I know a number of American expats here and I have always found it odd that non-residents have to pay taxes. Is there a treaty in place where the US at least credits you with the amount you pay in Mexico?

When I was still paying Canadian income taxes (my wife and kids still lived in Canada at the time, so it was considered a significant attachment to the country) I was credited with the amount of income tax I paid in Singapore. Granted, I pay a lot less tax in Singapore, but it made me feel better knowing I wasn't getting hit twice for the same income.

 

I do my own taxes anymore,sold a business before checking and moving south. I've run "foreign sales tax deduction" through three major tax filing systems all three told me sales tax aboard can not be deducted.

The U.S. Takes a mafia type approach to collecting taxes. Move aboard? FU pay me. Dying of cancer? FU pay me. I can't I like I like it but the only way to getaway from it is to renounce your citizenship. That's doesn't appeal to me at all. So I pay and I pay way more the I use too I don't have any deductions any more.
