Hit this home like a freight train. And good lord is Tamiflu 'spensive! Started 2014 sick and ended it the same. Phooey. Here's to 2015! I'm ready to get back to Zumba and swimming.

Shot wasn't as effective as it was supposed to be this year, but can help a little. Just wash your hands like crazy! (That's what I've been doing)

Correction from previous deadlift brag: only my last set was 225x3.

More bragging: hit 230x2 in my final set last night. Whee!

Squatted 430x6 on Sunday. Feel good, though I've gained weight. Can't have it all, I guess.

I'm finally down four pounds from my Sunmer of Love [Handles].

    I started a month-long fitness challenge today.

I ate a bunch of healthy shit.

    (Yes, figuratively.)

Got my treadmill up to speed. It had a damaged electrical cord from moving a few months back. Only one wire inside the jacket had frayed copper. So I cut that, then twisted and soldered that cable back together. Plenty of electrical tape around everything else. So then jumping on the treadmill made a horrible squeak at any speed. Tried adjusting the belt tension via the rear roller. That didn't work so I looked up lubricating the deck. My brand of treadmill uses a wax lubricant. Car wax, ski/snowboard wax, what type of wax? Finally found out it was paraffin. Off to Michaels for a one pound block of canning wax. Loosened the belt up a lot, then took a chunk and rubbed it all over the deck where my feet make contact. Had to crank the belt back in position. Once I got up to a running speed, the squeaks finally subsided. I guess it needed the heat from friction to spread the wax out. It still throws a code anytime I adjust the elevation, but I can worry about that another day. Apparently it's the speed sensor.

We joined a gym last week. One location is close to my husband's work, and while the one in our town is not particularly close to home (there is a gym in the shopping center next door that is closer), our friends recommended it without reservations, as several of them use it, and it meets our needs. We went for the first time yesterday, as I figure I can still work my lower body even while trying to sort out my cervical radiculopathy. Plus, I'm not supposed to sit too much for the sake of my neck, and walking on the treadmill or using the elliptical seems to be perfect.

My other issue is that I am showing pre-hypertensive BP levels, and have been at the last few doctor visits. This is a new development, and I have a lengthy family history of high BP. I'd rather nip it in the bud than let it get worse. Seriously--nothing gets me moving faster than suggesting I'm like my mother when it comes to health  The lady's cholesterol is so high that if it went any higher, she would be a solid, and her BP levels aren't any better; she has to manage both with medications, an idea I find unpalatable.

We've also instituted a competition. Hubs has gotten chunkier because of changes in work and commuting (sits more, walks less), so he is in a similar boat. We've got the same BMI, so that is one thing we can both focus on changing, giving us a fairly even playing field.

Back to the physio today to work on my dodgy shoulder - hoping this gets sorted out soon - it is hampering my fitness options.

Three days in a row! A little tight this morning, but nothing a foam roller couldn't fix.

I made it to the gym five days in a row so far...getting ready for a sixth. I'm still taking it fairly easy as I don't have a rescue inhaler at the moment, but I've yet to have any breathing issues while trying to push my max on the elliptical, which is a huge deal for me.

  18. I am starting stronglifts 5x5 weight lifting workout. My legs are so sore today. The weights are based around a squat with a bar of weights. I started off with just the empty bar. And man, my legs are feeling it today. Wow.

Was trying to decrease one of my BP meds, apparently was a bad idea the med in question has quite a bit of withdrawal symptoms, so my BP went through the roof for several days while I got back on it. Anyway I decided to focus on light cardio and hit the bike for 30 minutes 4 times this week. Felt pretty good as my BP went down. Friday just worked the weights and was sore the next day, took Saturday off.

Sunday I did the bike at a more moderate pace for 30 mins and then squatted. It went 135, 285, 225, 275, 315, 365 405, and 435 for 5 reps each. I was sweating buckets, but it felt damned good. Did some band work for my shoulders and went home. The cardio already payed off, because I recovered from the squat sets a lot faster. There seems to be something to doing almost daily cardio, who knew?

Backtrack 18 months ago: Weight was way out there 260+, smoking pack and a half, couldn't walk 50 yards without giving out of breath. Dying a slow death. Wife already disabled due to MS and relies on me for her survival. So I bit the bullet and started dieting and cutting out my bad habits. Weight now 185, 5 to 10 cigarettes a day, walking a great deal with no problems. Blood pressure still a little high 150/92, working on it thru diet. Feel a lot better, not bad for a 59 yr. old man....
