My intentions for this are to discuss MMA, Boxing, Kickboxing, Grappling, etc. Not WWE or anything like that.

    Favorite fighters
    Recent events
    Training tips
Anything else involving Real combat sports.

I will start by saying I don't actually compete in any of said sports, I am just an avid fan. I hope to some day get some actual training in some stand up and Wrestling/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I do have several friends who compete in MMA and Muay Thai Kickboxing at a professional level which is really exciting. Let the discussion begin, hopefully I'm not the only fan of combat sports or this will be a very boring discussion.

Does fightin' off the ladies count? 'Cause I lose every time...

Seriously, though, I like watching the occasional Bellator match on early morning tv on the weekends, if I surf by it on the menu, but I don't go out of the way to search out MMA shows.

I used to enjoy watching boxing, but Mike Tyson cured me of that.

I guess the only martial arts I like watching these days are the Olympics and movie martial arts. Capoeira is my favorite to watch, as the fluidity of the moves are just beautiful to behold.

I can see where you are coming from with boxing, it certainly isn't what it used to be. It seems very rare that the two best guys at a weight class fight each other for a belt which I find very disappointing. Anymore aside from watching the Olympics or highlights of the marquee fights I don't really follow boxing.

i still love Manny, despite the fact that he's probably done boxing now... he'd make a killing opening up his own gym though...

Yea, it was kind of disappointing the way he went down in his last fight. I wanted to see him and Mayweather happen.

Though I get a feeling I might end up talking to myself in this thread it won't be for lack of trying...

Does anyone have thoughts on Mayweather vs. Pacquiao?
    Will it happen?
    Who will win?
    Will it be competitive?

Although I'm into martial arts (Kenpo) and boxing, I don't watch boxing that much...then again, it's the same with most sports with me...I'd prefer to participate than observe.

And when I do get into a boxing match, it tends to be heavyweights...but perhaps, that's because I'm big myself...so I relate to it.

I'm sure Mayweather vs. Pacquiao will happen sooner or later.
I'm thinking the Money will ghost Pac-man.

And although I'm left-handed, I don't fight south-paw like Pacquiao, I'm more orthodox...I have a power right, so I leverage the accuracy of my left, if any preference...but I prefer really to switch it up.

Mayweather is statistically the better fighter...and in the lighter belts, it often goes to a decision...especially when better boxers are matched.

To each his own...I'm more of a hands on kind of guy.

    @Rogue49
Have you ever checked out Glory Kickboxing on SpikeTV, though you don't care much for watching they put on some pretty good shows usually.

I just lost a bunch of shit I just typed, and I don't have the energy to retype it. I'll get around to some of the stuff later.

    In short:

I do Muay Thai and hapkido (kind of like a Korean aikido/jujutsu).

I don't train to compete, though. I do Muay Thai because it's more hands-on practical/linear, and I do hapkido because it's a thinking martial art that's pretty goddamn beautiful. I do both also because they're really fun.

I was never really into watching combat sports, but after training in martial arts for three years, I now have a passing interest. I haven't seen many fights (like on PPV), but I've enjoyed some of them quite a bit.

Memorable fight? I watched Anderson Silva break his leg in half on live TV.

Recent fight? I watched Anderson Silva win in kind of a boring fight only to be disappointed that he tested positive for steroids.

    Anyway, this is a start.

I can see Manipulator Mayweather outpointing Manny. He has dragged this out to let Manny age. Yes, Manipulator has also aged, but in boxing aging usually has more of a negative impact on aggressive fighters such as Manny.

One possible factor is Manny could come out boxing and turn the fight into a chess match. He has the skills. The question is can he outbox Manipulator?

Another factor is suppose Manipulator turns out to be another Roy Jones Jr., a great boxer with a glass jaw that became exposed after his defensive skills deteriorated.

    -------------------------------------------------------

FWIW I started a boxing thread many months ago not realizing that this one existed. I've been boxing fan for many years, but have followed it much since PPV "took over," and because I refuse to pay for TV.

I don't go out of my way to see it on TV, but I do sometimes watch clips of bouts on vid on the web. I'll see if they have some recorded available.
My problem is, I'm very particular about controlled matches...which you have to have for public bouts...often they get repetitious, grappling to rest or simply go down to ground for what is a wrestling match.

Boxing and other televised events sometimes relies too many on the point system...and the strategy around it.

If I'm going to observe, I prefer private studios with competitions between various studios...the rules are more open and real, but it doesn't get out of hand because the competitors listen to the monitors out of respect.
    Unfortunately, I'm really picky.

I used to love early Mike Tyson, because he'd come out there so raw...he didn't care about making a show, he went in...and he went in on the inside. Back when his coach was alive.
I didn't care if it was a few seconds...because that's how it happens in real life. Seconds.
But then his coach died and he got distracted with fame...and he got sloppy, couldn't survive the long haul.

Personally, I love to find clips on the net with real life situations, to see how fast it went down and what the people did to deal with the situation.
Like the martial artist who got filmed dealing with some bar bullies outside. The bullies were down & out in two seconds, quick...but this wouldn't translate into anything entertaining on TV.

I could post a long rant about the points system, namely how it needs to be used more liberally, but could be misused to make certain the "right" fighter wins. Maybe I'll write it on the computer, and post it.

Tyson is a sad, but typical story in boxing. The part of me concerned about fighters that are used then discarded feels sorry for him. The part of me that sees him as a street punk, bully, & rapist doesn't feel sorry for him at all.

One thing that bothers me is many people view Cus D'Amato as the one guy able to keep Tyson on track. Which is true, but only to a certain extent--Cus covered-up Tyson's 'indescretions.' Teddy Atlas, who clearly has an axe to grind with Tyson & D'Amato, tells some interesting stories about them. Part sour grapes, definately, but some truth as well.

True about Tyson, but I wasn't considering from a morality stand-point...just effectiveness as a fighter and style. (I try not to get into the outside the ring soap-opera, because there are so many)

I wonder if we could set up a computerized "tagging" tool, that tracks & counts shots...and can be incorporated into a more effective points differential. Like horse-races and human races.
Not that it would replace the judge...but it would make the judge more accountable.
The tracking device couldn't evaluate passion nor actual results...but it definitely could put a clear number out.

Unfortunately, the fighters would adjust their style and strategy to take advantage of the tracker.
However, if you gave more onus to results, KOs and so on...the number would then become just another evaluator. (like the instant replay in Football and so on)

The points system you describe sounds a lot like how Olympic boxing is now scored. The problem is it heavily favors boxers over sluggers, but that's also a problem with the current ten points must system in pro boxing.

Does one solid punch that looks good but doesn't hurt the receiver count more than a three punch combination? If one fighter has clearly controlled the action for 2:40, but gets wobbled by one punch, who wins the round? I'll write up something about that. I've been meaning to anyway, now I have some motivation.

Edit--Yes, Tyson in his prime was an animal in the ring. Unfortunately that led to him punching on the break, after the bell rang, while the ref was breaking the fighters, etc. And let's not forget the ear bite.
