I dunno about you, but I'm pissed. Why? Because I defended him. On blog comments, in forums, chatrooms, in public. I defended him using the same reasoning he used. I used the line about how he's the most tested man in the world and never failed a single test. I used the line about how people like Floyd Landis are the real cheaters, not upstanding men like Lance Armstrong. To my embarrassment, I even joined the chorus of people who believed Le Monde's relentless pursuit of Armstrong was really some kind of deep-seated (and fashionable) anti-Americanism mixed with resentment that this American could win their race seven times over!

And now, I find that I've been taken. Hook, line, and sinker. I'm pissed because I feel like a fool. And I'm pissed even more because I should've known better. I've been down this road, defending Marion Jones, and she suckered me too. Sports heroes are overrated and Charles Barkley was right. Looking back now, I really can't understand why everybody was pissed when he declared to the world that he's not a role model.

Thanks for posting this B_G. I remember Terry Fox very well. It's good to remind people what a true hero looks, sounds, and behaves like.

  6. ..and people got upset when 4 years ago i mentioned that the feats that Usain Bolt did in Beijing were not something a clean athlete could possibly achieve. I still stand by that statement even more so today. Anytime any country or team dominates a sport, it usually means there's a systematic rort in the sport.

As much as i hated charles barkley as a player, i admired him as a character of the game.

I actually believed Armstrong and felt that the authorities were attempting persucute him. I haven't seen and read all of the interviews, press conferences, etc., but I did watch his interview with Charlie Rose. Armstrong is an extremely convincing liar.

My question is this--How was he able to beat the numerous tests that were supposed to detect cheating?

I admit that the detailed scientific explanations go way over my head. Perhaps some of y'all can provide some Cheating In Pro Bicycling For Dummies answers.

    Edited for typos and spelling.

    Read this:

How Lance Armstrong beat the drug tests | News | Geek.com

It's a not too in-depth description of how he did it.

Cliff Notes - Most of the substances he used are naturally occurring in the human body, so with a bit of forewarning he could "dilute" his blood with saline to mask the higher than normal concentrations of EPO. Basically, the criminals were ahead of the cops in their technology. Once the cops advanced enough, the criminals couldn't hide any more.

Thanks! That article is just what I was hoping for. I'm probably not the only scientifically challenged  person here at TFP, but at least I admit it .

I'm honestly not all up to date on the science of it either. I've read much more about the baseball side of "juicing", but many of the principles are the same.

At the end of the day, my biggest problem with Lance is how he worked to destroy lives and companies to protect his lie. He actually won millions in damages via lawsuits against people who claimed he was cheating. Think about that. People who exposed him had to pay him millions of dollars for calling him a cheater. What a guy.

I don't follow the aftermath, but I do know that several people and organizations were going after him to get their money back. No doubt Armstrong knows how to protect his assets, he clearly isn't a "dumb jock." He might have to surrender a considerable sum, but I doubt that he'll end up broke.

A comment worth repeating--Lance Armstrong is a very convincing liar.

I pride myself, sometimes rightly and sometimes wrongly, on being able to read most people. Armstrong had me, and apparantly MANY others, totally convinced that he didn't cheat. Much of the deserved backlash is probably because he did manage to so thoroughly fool so many people. Nobody likes to be fooled on any level, and the level acheived by Armstrong is way up there.
