Since 9/11, US has expanded grant programs for training in emergency planning, preparedness, mitigation, response, waste disposal, etc. resulting from a chemical/biological terrorist attack but we've never made that same commitment to threats from innocent civilians carrying a deadly disease.

Overblown issue at this point. Death toll EU/USA is four and total deaths all time isn't even a bad flu season. More people die of dysentery in Liberia (by a LARGE margin, than Ebola), and Liberia isn't exactly a bastion of great public health.

Is something to keep an eye one, be concerned about, but the panic is grossly over done.

There's a photo going around Facebook stating how more Americans have been married to Kim Kardashian than have died from Ebola.

Ebola - you recover faster and even if you do die at least you don't have "Mr Kim Kardashian" attached to you.

    This is an interesting read.
I'm a Hazmat-Trained Hospital Worker: Here's What No One Is Telling You About Ebola | Abby Norman

Reinforces some of what I already thought but also worries me because she makes it clear we need to be working together to fight this kind of stuff and this country has become horribly dysfunctional.

Our Texas politicians are having field day using ebola to get media coverage.

I'm waiting for them to tie ebola to the numerous terrorists sneaking into the US across the Texas/Mexico border .

I heard a guy the other day ranting about our "border crisis." I didn't say anything because he "wasn't all there," and I recall the old saying (Mark Twain? Will Rogers?), "Never argue with an idiot, onlookers might not be able tell the difference."

Now would be a good time to sell common vitamin supplements using wording something like this, "To build and maintain a strong and healthy immune system to help fight dangerous diseases such ebola."

Wait a minute, too late, it's already happening.

I'm actually very impressed with how calm and professional the folks in NY seem to be.
I don't know if it's that they've been through pretty serious shit already so one sick person isn't going to freak them out so much or that they have a little better public health system.

All I know is that the CDC is really lucky this isn't an actual airborne disease like the flu. I hope they are looking at their policies again in order to fix them, especially if it is an airborne virus.

I also think the CDC should setup a remote bed & breakfast in Florida, California or Utah where doctors coming back from volunteering in West Africa can stay for three weeks upon their return in quarantine. I heard some people on TV talking about the horror of taking three weeks off as a reason people wouldn't want to volunteer. They would be crazy. Relax. Read a book. Surf the Internet. Watch some TV shows. Read some medical reports. Reply to some e-mails. I don't think it will hurt.

You are already volunteering your time, I can understand why they wouldn't want to be in quarantine for another 3 weeks when they got home. It may be inevitable now, but personally three weeks off would be a hardship not a boon for me.

The argument was that it would cut into what time they had to volunteer.
If they took a leave of absence for Doctors Without Borders but three weeks of that had to be spent in quarantine every time you came home basically you would be stealing three weeks of time you could be helping people.
