1. We've had very few donations over the year. I'm going to be short soon as some personal things are keeping me from putting up the money. If you have something small to contribute it's greatly appreciated. Please put your screen name as well so that I can give you credit. Click here: Donations

What's interesting about the Dukan and others like Atkins is that these protein rich diets are in line with a lot of the recent research being done around the foods we eat. I am currently producing a documentary on dietary fats and oils and the experts that we are speaking to all point to sugar and carbs as the greatest contributing factor to metabolic syndrome.

Without advocating for any specific diet, the latest research suggests that lots of leafy green vegetable and protein are the way to go. Cut all dairy and carbs (including fruit).

Regardless, Ralph, do what you can to get better.

There is a lot of data showing how choosing whole grains over refined grains greatly reduces the risk of heart disease. One difference lies in the antioxidants and fibre content that is removed from refined grains.

And in my own case, my recent choice to cut out most refined sugar and refined grains led met to lose 10 pounds without even trying—and I wasn't overweight to begin with. Whole grains and whole fruit are still featured prominently in my diet.

Ralph, I hope this is the sort of thing you'll discover. It's not necessarily all about cutting out this or cutting out that. Quite often, it's: eat this, not that.

Take some of the time you'd ordinarily be having a cigarette and do research (online, or talk to folks who've already taken that time such as health specialists, dieticians & people who have lost weight and stabilized at a lower weight). It is true that there are things you can eat/snack on that aren't necessarily going to keep you heavy. Indeed, some diets - when you follow them with care and knowledge - allow you to eat as much as you want. You just need to be specific about what it is you eat. If what you crave is an oral fixation, or to take something in to fill the hole that cigarettes are leaving - carry sugar free gum, celery sticks, strap a water bottle to your belt. Everyone you know will support you, and talking about it keeps you busy i.e. distracts you from having a smoke/eating foods that cause weight gain.

    Good luck.

  6. ralphie, I ended up becoming 'addicted' to toothpicks after I quit smoking. It replaced the oral part of the addiction with another form of activity I guess. I'd rather not have a toothpick in my mouth as much as I do but it is better than the alternative.

Please think of that every time you want to pick up a cigarette or cheat on your diet. I've seen lots of friends and family in situations similar to where you are now. Some of them make improvements and enjoy life for decades longer. Unfortunately some lose that sense of urgency to change within months or a year or two, and the results are usually very bad. We want you around for TFP 10.0, and I'm sure your family does too.

    Ralphie,

just wanted to say I commend you for trying to take steps. It's never too late.

TFP is here for you - this community is absolutely fantastic and I know I wouldn't be the person I am today without them.

Use us however we can help you! Sometimes folks have started blogs just trying to get all the stop quitting frustration out, or the dieting frustrations.

Is there something you've been wanting to do with your family but you haven't had the funds? Maybe start a jar for all the money you'd normally spend on cigarettes and plan a family trip or outing. It'll be the reward for helping to ensure you stay on this planet long enough to be there with them!
