I know. I love that curling action! (Thank you!) You physically guide them as they grow and they take it from there.
My garden is actually "our" garden. I am learning more all the time from my hubs, who has been into gardening since a kid.
The most important thing I've learned is plant the type of flower (or bush) that likes the sun and soil conditions it gets where you live.
No matter how much you may want [a certain flower], if you have the wrong conditions where you live, you won't get good results!

    So:
    1. Pick a plant that likes your environment.
    2. Treat the soil to make it best for the plants (manure) and maybe other nutrients.
    3. Find a free mulch source and mulch the heck out of it because you have to water less often/evaporation is slower.
    4. Dead head or cut back if there is over growth.
    5. Split up your hostas in the spring or fall because they will naturally overgrow with the center dying and the outside coming back strong. They get huge and overtake everything including other hostas. But they are a great plant as they are very forgiving (animal abuse, etc.)
    6. Take pictures year-to-year to see what worked and didn't so in the spring when you are planning you can adjust. Also, if you just like to watch things grow, take lots and lots of snaps. :)

I must say that it gives me a lot of joy as well. Your garden clearly shows the love that you put into it.
