Things You Just Can't Understand

What are some things, that no matter how hard you try, you just can't wrap your head around?

I have some family members that are fairly conservative Christians; they got married after only a couple of months of dating because the church said they should. My cousin-by-marriage regularly posts stuff on Facebook about what "Christian" marriage looks like, some of which verges on subservience to her husband, which just squicks me out. For the life of me, I cannot wrap my head around half of the stuff she posts about marriage. Today's example:

Um...pretty sure my marriage should make me happy most of the time; I get that it's work, and there have been times that I've been miserable, but I've never thought that it was somehow spiritually perfecting work. I don't need that kind of external locus, I guess. While I'm sure this guy has some good marriage advice somewhere, I'll stick with Dr. John Gottman and actual science (Relationship Experts -).
So what are some things you just can't comprehend even though other people clearly believe them?

Get in the kitchen and start squirting out babies, STAT!!!

I don't get the addiction to misery either.

It's not just marriage, it's religion in general.
That somehow you should be putting aside everything else in life that gives you pleasure or happiness ( in some cases even convenience), because your religion should provide a everything you need.
I get a lot from Judaism but it is not my entire life.
I was having a conversation with one of my more religious relatives about what an awful job of butchering is done on kosher meats in the grocery store and how you pay five times as much.
If you go to a kosher Butcher where meat is cut right it's at least eight times as costly, but the chicken is the same in both places.
The chickens still have pin feathers in them.
She said it was a mitzvah to clean them.
You just don't argue with logic like that.

Truer words, my friend. I pretty much just shut up and watch from the sidelines; I admit to being kind of fascinated by it.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

I am completely baffled by the current national Republican party.
And I say this as someone who had never voted for a Democratic presidential candidate until after W.

I still haven't seen a democratic candidate I would vote for, and I can say just as quickly the republicans options these are not much if any higher on that list. The past two presidential elections were classic "lesser of two evils" and made it an easy call to pass on casting a vote.

I cannot understand why some folks see admitting that they were mistaken as a sign of weakness.
And a fake admission (of being mistaken) followed by a fake "I'm sorry" does not count in my book.

I suppose it may seem irrational that I need a genuine mea culpa but as hard as I try to "let go," when someone has done me wrong and then wants to" just forget it," I cannot.

It's also an exceptionally difficult behavior to model, but I try.

Its easy to say you don't get things that are really out there and rare, but it seems foot fetishes are common and I just don't get where it comes from. I once said on the old TFP to a woman who said she had ugly feet. If you are naked and I'm looking at your feet, something is horribly wrong with me.

I try, too. I'm trying right now.
    I'm pretty persistent.
I do give in (for peace and/or sanity's sake), but I rarely give up (on people--or my sanity haha).

I don't have trouble understanding that. Rage and paranoia and hatred are emotionally rewarding. They have a siren call that can lure even the most rational people.

Haters imagine they're among the few who really understand what's going on in the world. Real life is a mess of loose ends and unresolved issues -- but to a paranoid, everything is connected, everything is significant, everything is simple, nothing is hard to understand.

Compared to you guys, I'm a party-line robot. In ten presidential elections since I turned 18, I have voted for the Democratic nominees ten times.

(I have sometimes voted for Republican or minor party candidates for state and local offices, but never for president.)

  13. I dont understand why theres so much judgement on single people and women who dont have kids . I dont understand why you would ask someone why they are single, like seriously, what kind of a question is that anyway???? its like single and childless people dont deserve to be treated with some manners.

I agree. The general consensus seems to be that a woman isn't "complete" unless she's had a child. I've never understood that.

Thats a question I couldn't answer until I was a parent. There is something so awesome about being a parent, that I had no inkling of when I was not one, that I can understand why people ask that who have kids. Its not a malicious or nosy thing, its a genuine they want you to be happy thing. It may be a sore spot, but most don't ask it to rub salt in it.

Personally I'd never ask someone why they didn't have kids because the reason may itself be painful and not my business, but I do sometimes wonder, with friends who treat their dogs like children.

But I digress. Don't want to distract from the OP.

    I don't understand flower crowns. It's a silly music festival trend.I don't get it.

That's where I don't understand how some (not all) people with children don't understand that people—myself included—can be and are happy without kids. To that I say, "Thanks, I think? I can appreciate your good intentions, but you're way off the mark."

    Just saying.

I'm kind of stuck between the two positions. I enjoy kids, but I've kind of burnt myself out on them, especially at their younger stages, after two years of teaching preschool. On top of that, I've discovered that married life without children is tons of fun! So I go back and forth between wanting-not wanting.

One thing I cannot understand is how my husband can drive us somewhere using Google Maps navigation on the way there, and not pay enough attention to be able to figure out the way home without it. I refused to put the smartphone back up. He needs to learn.

Dogs are like permanent two-year-olds that you can lock up in a crate when you want to go clubbing and not get arrested for it.

I will eventually respond to this thread adequately. I'm still mulling it over.

I'm guilty of this. I fucking love my animals more than anything. But the best thing about animals is that you can board them for a week and go get drunk on the beach or something and not worry about them. ;)
