Anyone getting as excited for D3 as I am? After so many years of WoW, I'm really looking forward to having a game I can pick up and put down a little bit easier, and just smash some stuff in the face without worrying about herding 24 cats.

The F&F beta is in non-NDA full swing and the closed beta is close to follow. In addition, they've made the talent trees+runestone effects public, so you can really start to get an idea of how classes are going to work.

I'm currently very intrigued by the notion of making a battlemage (i.e. melee wizard who can take some punishment) and threw together this build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#XcRbWT!WeU!YabbYZ

There's a ton of awesome possibilities out there, though, and it sounds like you'll be able to respec pretty frequently. What has anyone else made that they're itching to try?

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

I'm totally unsophisticated as a gamer.
Diablo is the one computer game that I have really enjoyed.
I haven't played anything since our kids were born almost 4 years ago but Diablo 3, especially if it comes out during the winter will get me going again.

if you haven't played it, Torchlight is very similar mechanically and could provide a temporary fix while you wait. i've put about 40 hours into trying all 3 classes and enjoy it a lot.

Having been a huge Diablo 1 fan, and playing D2 fanatically through the closed beta and onwards, it would be uncharacteristic for me to not be excited about D3....

Buuuuut... I'm probably gonna have to let it pass me by. It's hard to find the time to play much of anything these days, and there's nothing worse than having that hot new title installed and waiting, but not being able to scrounge up the time for it.

Then again, my wife and I are waiting anxiously for Guild Wars 2 as well, with the understanding that we'll play when we can play - whether it's an hour a day, an hour a week, or an hour a month. Perhaps we'll give D3 a try after all.

You know, at first I was all "meh" about Diablo III, given that I'm more of a strategy RPGer.

But I watched a bunch of videos, and now I'm kind of intrigued. It appears maybe Blizzard has been designing this as a way to get more of my money, now that I've officially divorced WoW.

It will be a tough sell though, as I intend on actually getting through the current PS3 games I have. Maybe one day.

I'll see what the reviews are like.

I didn't do Diablo when it first launched. I only got it after someone recommended that we could play online together, which was a D2 Battlechest.

It was so awesome to play with my best friend in LA and my wife in the same game at the same time. It was incredible for when we were doing it back in 2001 over cable modem.

I hope that we can get to play this again.

Okay, first and foremost... it's very pretty. It isn't WoW graphics. It's Diablo graphics. It's very much better Diablo graphics. It's very eerie and it's not as intuitive as I thought initially but it wasn't wasted, I didn't use my skills for the first 2 levels because I didn't understand how to use them.

I got to level 4, Skogafoss got to level 7 and we both got DC'd from our game and then decided we'd try playing together. Since it's battle.net there's no LAN only like before so we weren't able to play together since it looks like our connection is not available for whatever reason.

Game play is fast paced, but not overwhelming. There's a few areas that reminded me of the just shit ton skeleton rooms. Weapons are interesting, changing skills in the ad hoc before grabbing mobs is pretty cool. Makes for some interesting re-spec's. There's a campaign mode for beta, and not available is a versus mode.

We stopped playing for the moment since we can't get back into the game.

What classes did you guys play and, vaguely, how were you speccing them? What is counter-intuitive about the skill use system? I look forward to more reports!

I played the demon hunter and she was a monk.

We finished the first part of the content in a couple of hours. It was fun.

The skills were just spells that unlock at each level. You pick them as you see fit before a fight, probably can do it during if you can do it fast enough and have some cover. The demon hunter has hatred and discipline to manage, so some spells require one or the other. If you specced without using discipline you're missing out on a good part of the rotation for damage dealing. It's not that it's not intuitive, it is just trying to be different enough from WoW to be not WoW.

The inventory system is the same, grid and some things are 2 blocks and some are 1. The Cauldron of Jordan and the Nephalem Cube allow one to sell on the run and disenchant items without having to go to the city. There is also a teleporting stone so that there is no need for a scroll of teleportation. As you party, there is a banner from the city that ports you right to your selected team member.

Dungeon is somewhat breakable, you can use some places and spaces to deal damage to the mobs. I assume there are achievements since there is a tracker of the most kills you have in sequence. I think Skogafoss killed 22 and I got to 15.

That's cool news, cyn. Also, it's awesome you have an SO that is into gaming as much as you are. :)

I never got into WoW because of my low-end p.c., and because I can't seem to get used to controlling characters with the keyboard.

I've been kinda following the development of D3 ever since y'all have been talking and posting about it. (a few years now, I think)
I really want to play it, but I'm afraid my laptop won't handle the game.

    Is that the case?

I was a big D2 fan and still play WoW. I'll certainly give D3 a try; but cash for gear really strikes me the wrong way. I haven't decided if it's a deal breaker; but being beat by someone that is willing to pay more doesn't sit well with me.

But no one is beating anyone. It's not a persistent MMO game world like WoW. There's no competitive aspect to D3, and there's no (or much less) epeen because you aren't hanging around Stormwind or Orgrimmar or Shat or Dalaran or anywhere else letting people fawn over your gear. The only thing it does is allow people who have time or luck make some cash off people who don't want to rely on time or luck for their personal upgrades.

I'm not sure what the versus mode is. I don't know if that means it's PvP or if it's PvE but competitive.

I did check out the AH today and it's gold only for the moment. I picked up a quiver but have no idea how it gets delivered to me.

The end screen of the 4 player campaign I was on.

I'm not sure what the system specs are. The WoW was very forgiving and could be played on the lowest of systems. I knew people who played it on a p3 laptop. D3 on the other hand, it is very intensive graphically. I'll try turning it down and see what it looks like.

I am pretty fed up of Warcraft by now. Maybe I'll try it.

The number of classes seem a bit limited, but I reckon I'd try being a demon hunter. Cam you play on a free trial like you can on WOW, to see if you like it?
