Which is why I suggested adding another ref to do the replay judging. That said, I think what MLS has done with fines after games solves a lot of problems.

Holy hell, Clint Dempsey is a beast. Broken nose, couldn't breathe in the game, kept on. He says he's going to play in the match against Portugal in Manaus without a mask.

Draws only happen in the group stage. In the knockout stage, they do extra time and a shootout to determine a winner.

I'm pulling for Team USA (duh), and any team that eliminates Brazil from the playoffs.

Well, Ghana-Germany yesterday was a surprise.

We're only a few minutes out from kickoff in USA v. Portugal. I'm really looking forward to this game. I'm hoping Clint Dempsey can hang in there despite the broken nose.

Well, that was a heart-breaker at the end for us United States fans. Drat! Almost qualified after two games, and no real pressure (other than group standings) for Thursday's match...snatched away at the end. But then again, we're at 4 pts with a decent goal differential and I think we're capable of a decent result on Thursday. We're doing much better in the group stages than I thought we would have.

Ruud van Nistelrooy just had a fabulous breakdown of how the Dutch team works. Dutch soccer is legendary for its flexibility and flow; the Dutch national team in the 70s was known as the "Clockwork Orange." It was really cool to see it illustrated on the touchscreen, of how different players can move into different positions with ease in their 3-5-2 formation. I'm excited for this match despite the absence of Robin van Persie due to a one-game suspension.

And man, that 2-all draw yesterday was painful. The USMNT has some really great energy, though, despite a slow start yesterday, and I'm hopeful it will see them through the group stages. I really believe Clint Dempsey can get it done.

Damn, Italy's out, and apparently Luis Suarez bit a dude in the ear during the match. Wow. Group D passes on Costa Rica and Uruguay. Interesting.

Suarez...I have no more words. I don't know what FIFA's ruling is going to be but they're going to have to make a pretty firm statement with his punishment. It is, after all, the 3rd time something like this has happened.

If I had it my way, he wouldn't be allowed to play football again for at least a year...some would say he shouldn't be allowed back onto a football pitch ever again!

The Guardian keeps insisting that Suarez got shoulder checked in the mouth. I'm pretty sure a shoulder check doesn't result in those kind of teeth marks and I am sure that Suarez would have some kind of lip injury were that the case.

Is it possible that FIFA might delay, or take no displinary action, against one of its stars?

Could TV viewing ratings, i.e. money (perhaps even under-the-table payoffs) influence their decision?

Certainly FIFA wouldn't let hampering the chances of victory by a favorite team influence their decision?

I'm shocked ! That would never happen in boxing . :p

HAH. All of the above could absolutely happen.

I'd be surprised if they did anything during the tournament. I think they'll call it indeterminate and move on. I just don't see them banning Suarez from the rest of the World Cup, particularly when they're playing in a South American host country. He's a huge star down there, who came up out of poverty to make it, etc. Of course, I could be wrong.

I see this as the most likely scenario.

We'll see - at least FIFA is apparently opening an investigation into it, but regardless...tomorrow is the big day for us "Yanks." I'd love to beat Germany, but I'm hoping for at least a draw. That would be fantastic.
