You can't refute something effectively if you don't understand it. Which is to say, nobody here is refuting the existence if rape culture. That it hurts your feelings is not a refutation. That rape is perpetrated by individuals is not a refutation.

Back on topic: the arguments presented in this thread against the existence of rape culture could also be deployed against every other 'culture'. "I don't watch network television or listen to the radio, so pop culture doesn't exist." "Even though I'm poor, I don't act like it, so cultures of poverty don't exist." "I don't really care for facile notions of freedom and individuality, so American culture doesn't exist." "Yeah, I'm Irish, but I don't celebrate St. Patrick's day, so Irish culture doesn't exist."

So is some Twitter campaign going to change it? How is the Pentagon doing fixing that problem (which is when this Twitter campaign should have started)? What are Feminists doing to change the "high-class, most successful rich guy" gets a different woman every month culture that women are still participating in?

What should be done to really 'fix' the problem of having such a high number of women who are assaulted, abused, or raped? I think the US society needs to evolve on sex topics and talking to teens about sex/relationships. It needs to be reported and the rapists need to be punished, police need to do their jobs along with the court system. And date rape/passed out drunk rape needs to be addressed by high schools and colleges.

 

The first step towards self-imposed societal change is having conversations and hashing shit out. Twitter allows conversations that wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

Yes yes we've heard it before. Feminism is or is not whatever you need it to be in order to make sure no criticism ever sticks to it. Feminism is a giant monolith that means absolutely nothing but "equality" when you defend it, and it's nothing but individuals that aren't "true feminists" whenever somebody presents actual counter-examples.

Like I said. Feminism is good. Feminism is God. Anything that's bad must not be feminism, and anything that's not feminism must be bad. Everything you say is just some tired rehash of those axioms. If it's bad then you invent reasons why it "doesn't count" or it's "not REAL feminism", and if it's not feminism you just can't wrap your head around any way for it not to be bad.

Did anybody bring up feelings? No, They brought up the fact that you can't disprove something that claims disagreement or counter-evidence itself is ipso facto proof of its existence. You can't disprove a conspiracy theory that claims falling crime rates are proof of MORE crime.

 

Once we get into the "You can't prove culture doesn't not exist" territory, we've ventured too far into the absurd. I and others have given examples of rape culture drawn from the rich tapestry that is documented reality. And the responses have ranged from "I don't rape so rape culture doesn't exist." to "Nuhuh, those aren't examples of anything (but I'm not really going to elaborate)." to "Here is where I wrap my wholly unscientific, logically flawed response in scientific-sounding jargon with hopes that the jargon will fool you into thinking my response isn't logically and scientifically flawed." I remain unconvinced.

The obstinate refusal I see here to act as though culture actually exists (when that culture is unpleasant) is astounding. And yes, I will happily dismiss the arguments of people who can't be bothered to understand what I'm talking about. There are no logical or rhetorical flaws in doing so. There is no contradiction in demanding some amount of intellectual accountability and rejecting the flawed ideas of those unwilling to provide it.

Let's see, in order:
1. Lets see. Can't... doesn't... not... so you're saying it's logically invalid to say "You can't prove rape culture exists"? Not only have I not said ever said this, even if I HAD said this that is how burden of proof WORKS so it's not a valid argument.

What I HAVE said is that something which claims evidence against it is evidence for it is invalid because it's circular. You can not have something that's unfalsifiable, ever. No unfalsifiable, circular, claim is EVER logically valid. I HAVE quoted empirical facts against it, and I HAVE quoted RAINN's own arguments that rape culture does not exist.

2. Never said this. You guys however used this type of argument multiple times. Not only are you making things up completely, you're even being a hypocrite while doing it.

3. You're quoting your side's handwaving. You, charlatan, and baraku have done nothing but alternate between personally attacking me and insisting that I'm wrong without ever actually PROVING it. The only thing you ever do is say "You're wrong and everything you say is bullshit", that's pure bare assertion. I've actually proven WHY your arguments are not logically valid, or empirically wrong.

I said "Rape culture is circular logic because XYZ", "Your logic is invalid because ABC", and "Your argument fails because of N evidence". You on the other hand only ever insult me and insist you're right by default and I MUST be wrong purely because I disagree with you.

Nobody is arguing that culture itself doesn't exist, we're arguing RAPE CULTURE does not exist and you guys are pulling out every stop in trying to avoid having to make an honest argument. Hell at this point you've gone past pretending to read my posts and into flat out making shit up that's only loosely resembling them just so you can make more attacks.

The point is that comic is literally ignoring every single other thing about the UCSB shooting in order to paint as dishonest a picture as possible slanted for the political gain of your favored group.

You're supporting a group of people who've lied about someone's race, lied about his victims, lied about what websites he used, lied about his mental illness, lied about the contents of his diary, lie about how many men are raped (by women), rewrote the definition of rape itself to protect that lie, lie about how many men are victims of domestic violence, lie about how many women die, lie about the wage gap, lie about crime rates, lie, lie, lie, lie... just like you're doing right now.
