    If I were to keep bourban around for guests, I'd have Jack Daniels Black Label for those who really didn't care what it they drank, and Makers Mark for those did.

    That's not a slam of Jack Black. My FIL was a dedicated single malt guy, but he really enjoyed Jack Black. I could never win him over to MM.

    When I have whisky, it's normally Crown Royal. It's just been my default (though I admit I should explore the world of whisky more). I've had Canadian Club a few times, but this ad campaign may have stolen me away from Crown Royal:

    Damnit, if I was still drinking I'd give you unholy hell over your choices in bourban for three reasons:
    1. Your choices suck :D.
    2. Payback for the "tea" comments :p.
    3. Your choices suck :D.

    With that said, please try these: Highland Park 18 Year Old Single Malt Whisky (not a bourban, sue me), and Maker's Mark bourban (I never tried their 'better' bourbans, they're probably really good). Neat--no ice, no water, no mix, not chilled--of course.

    Unless you're being facetious, we must bring into question your relationship with whisky. Both Crown Royal and Canadian Club are Canadian whiskies, which are typically blended different from bourbon. These are not in accordance with proper bourbon.

    I'm sorry, but your entitlement to carry your whisky club card is under review.

    @Craven Morehead , @snowy , and @Borla will preside over your case.

    I've had Maker's Mark. I enjoyed it.

    I haven't had Highland Park, but I've had something from Glenlivet. (My father-in-common-law is a proud Scot.)

    You make me sad (Monty Python reference).

    I turned in my drinking card nearly seven years ago.

    I never much cared for Canadian blended whiskies/bourbans, and I didn't drink much bourban (I liked Member's Mark) or Scotch Whisky (I liked single malts, but it was my FIL who really enjoyed good single malt whisky, and he wasn't inclined to share :mad: ). I'd sometimes keep a bottle of Maker's Mark bourban and/or Glen Fiddich 12 Year Old Single Malt Whisky on hand.

    If you want to discuss Vodka, I will obstinately stand by my choices ;) .

    Canadian is very, very different from bourbon in a number of respects, but they do have some similarities. Both generally use corn as their base grain. However, Canadian whiskeys typically use significant amounts of rye to achieve their signature flavor. They have a sweet profile that tends to be more on the mild side of things, despite the presence of rye. Bourbons, also on the sweeter side (as opposed to Irish and Scotch whiskeys, which tend to be drier), have more body and nuance, typically from the use of new oak barrels for aging. Canadian whiskey does not dictate what kind of barrels need to be used, only that the whiskey needs to be aged for a minimum of 3 years.

    Personally, I think that last requirement is why even cheap Canadian whiskeys, like Canadian Mist, still taste so damn good. Therefore, I cannot fault @Baraka_Guru's choices. Maker's Mark is good, but at that price point, there are other Bourbons worth trying: Eagle Rare, Elijah Craig 12, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses. Elijah Craig 12 is probably my favorite out of the bunch.

    Lately I've been grooving on Tullamore Dew.

    We don't get a great variety of Canadian whiskeys here--just Canadian Club, Crown Royal, Canadian Mist, and Seagram's VO. I've heard tell of magnificent liquor stores in Portland with selections to die for, so I will have to investigate. I'm also on the lookout for a bottle or two of shochu.     A couple of thoughts before I leave this thread to the people actually know bourbon, whiskey, & whisky:
    Drink what you like, you're the one drinking it.
    If someone else doesn't like it, TFB, they're welcome to buy what their own.
    Drink in moderation. If you question whether or not you're drinking too much, you proabably are.

    I fell in love with Tullamore Dew last Christmas. My wife bought me a bottle of Irish single malt - which is very good - I love it too, but I had to run out for some 'visitors' whisky and bought a bottle of the Dew. Am I ever happy I did that.

    Other than that, I have a rather healthy collection of scotch singles - my preference to the stronger peat stuff like Lagavulin. But I do have about 12 bottles of various strengths and flavour from Scotland. My oddest is a Macallan Amber which is a maple infused almost liquer like drink.

    With my trip to Texas last summer, I made sure that I stopped at the Jim Beam distillery on the way back through Kentucky - bought a bottle of the double distilled stuff. Very nice. much nicer than the litre sized jug of JD I got at the duty free (you can eat that with a fork) So I have an appreciation for bourbon now. I don't think there is a Canadian bourbon, but I think there is an American Rye whisky. Since I teethed on Rye (ahem in high school) my drink back then was Canadian Club. So I don't indulge in the local brew anymore these days...it's too sweet for my liking.
