I got tired of bottling so I bought a keg system and installed it into my beer fridge.

    One word: awesome

I just pulled my first pint and it's cold, carbonated and delicious.

    TFP minds...

I have just brewed a Porter. It's a smoked porter. I need to give it a name.

    So far:

Hairy Porter and Coal Porter are all I've got.

    Any other ideas?

Just label it PORTER in white impact font on a black label.
(I've got nothing. I checked with my brother and he's got nothing.)

I do like the idea of clean black and white labels or raw paper and black ink labels. If I was making labels that was where I was heading. Any images would be wood block prints.

I am pretty much a keg only type right now, so labels aren't needed. Just cool/clever names.

Coal Porter is the name of a beer here that was so popular once upon a time that when the brewery went out of business, another one bought the recipe.

I'm planning on writing a porter recipe with my husband to be brewed in the next couple of weeks. My favorite porter right now is Brown Bess, an English-style porter from one of the breweries we visited Saturday. I'm thinking that's the route I want to go--softer edges just in time for spring.

How smoky is it? Like, rauchbier smoky? How much smoked malt did you use? When you finally taste it, let me know what you think. When we've used smoked malt at home, it seems like it dominates the flavor profile a bit too much for our taste.

I don't know how smokey it is yet. Just waiting for it to carbonate. We couldn't get smoked grains so we used peated grains instead. We'll see.

I think we are going with either: "Where Do You Want These Bags? Porter" or "Yes, I've Smoked Porter. Probably in one of my Drunken Stupors."

It's not all that smokey and it's just kind of, meh.

    Back to the drawing board.

Given the flavour is not great we have dubbed our beer:

    Balls Porter
    "It's a little hairy"

Took my first stab at all grain today. Everything appears to have gone well so far.

The only real issue was getting the temperature down. Our tap water only got the wort as low as 35c. We had to improvise and hope that we didn't infect the wort.

Buying a pump this week so we can pump ice water through the chiller.

The second batch of all grain is done and ready to be kegged.

The first batch, despite temperature issues, turned out pretty damn good. It didn't taste like we thought it would but it was good nonetheless.

The second batch is the same recipe. We are just trying to dial it all in. I am feeling pretty good about it.

I am hoping to design a recipe soon.

Gearing up for the next batch and trying to decide what to make.

I might do a lager and leave it in my friend's fridge for the summer. He is going away for two months.

My FIL used to brew his own beer. He never offered me one ; I hope that it tasted like shit ;).

We now have his brewing gear.
The bad news is we have no use for most it.
The good news is we now have a huge stock pot that comes in handy on occasion.

You could make malt soda, like Malta (soft drink) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That sounds interesting. I wouldn't mind trying my hand at non-alcoholic ginger beer, or a dark heavy malty non-alcoholic brew. I have no interest in "standard" n-a lager or pilsner style beer, and my wife can't stand root beer. If I brewed a dark beer, it would need to be sans caramel coloring due to a severe alergy.

A friend told me that in Germany, because of the strict DWI laws, there are a wide variety of good n-a brews. He said they're popular with professional drivers (cab drivers, delivery persons, etc.) who want to enjoy the taste of good beer without the risk of a DWI. I don't know if this is true. I do know that Spec's Liquor Warehouse & Deli, even as great as the central store is, doesn't carry much in the way of n-a beer.
