Hey, we read that book when we were still doing the sci-fi book club thing here. The Man in the High Castle is pretty good. I enjoyed it.

I finished The Man In the High Castle last night. I'm not sure what to think of it, but I admit that sci-fi isn't my favorite genre. TMITHC isn't exactly sci-fi, more like the-past-as-future-fiction. One thing I had to remind myself of, it was published in 1962. I semi-understand the jewelry, but not completely. It's on my re-read list.

I'm only a few pages into Ape House by Sara Gruen. It's going to be interesting to see if Gruen can pull off what the dustjacket plot blurb promises.

I highly recommend Ape House by Sara Gruen. It's a real page turner, & I don't use that term lightly.

There were a few times when I thought that Gruen was introducing too many characters which would muddy the waters, but she made it work. The end seemed a (just a) little rushed and perhaps a little too neat, but it wasn't that bad. I've read other novels where the authors clearly scrambled to figure out how to end the book.

Finally read the last Southern Vampire Mysteries, Dead Ever After. It wasn't as terrible as so many people were yelling about (OMG she doesn't end up with the right guy, this is AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1eleventy), but it wasn't anything special. I liked the first few books in the series better than the last few.

I started Red Rain, by R.L. Stine last night. It's okay so far. It's supposed to be "for adults," but I'm noticing a lot of similarities to his Fear Street books (which I loved in middle school, but this makes me think the book won't be actually scary or suspenseful.)

Finishing up a little Heinlein re-read mini-marathon before moving on to a YA novel that a friend of mine wrote-- she won an award for it, so apparently it should be a decent read....

I read Allende's Daughter of Fortune. I enjoyed it, but it didn't motivate me to read any of her other books.

Yup. The "twists" were kind of ridiculous.

Currently into The Usual Rules by Joyce Maynard. The main character, Wendy, is your typical thirteen year old. Her mother is working in an office in the World Trade Center on 9-11, and in a bit of a whirlwind decision, her biological father (whom she hasn't seen in years), shows up and brings her back with him to California. The book follows Wendy over the next year, and how she deals with grieving for her mother at the same time as getting to know her dad for the first time. Kind of intense, but good so far.

I've read quite a few of Irving's books, enjoyed most of them (there's a list somewhere in this tread). TCR is a good read, but IMO Irving uses a major cheat--he quickly 'skips over' a very important and complicated situation rather than writing his way through it.
