The 2014 NFL draft starts tonight.

There was a lot of media speculation about the number of good QBs in the draft. Over the past few weeks many 'experts' have backed away from how high the QBs will go in the draft.

Some things to consider re the Texans:

They have the overall #1 pick, unless a trade down deal has been made or will be made.

The GM, Rick Smith, has overall done a pretty good job of finding players that flew under the radar.

Bill O'Brien is in his first year as head coach. Judging from what he was able to do at Penn St under extremely bad circumstances, he too can find good players.

It doesn't appear that Johnny Manziel will drafted by the Texans. This is a wise move, IMO, despite what the rabid Texas A&M fans (very plentiful & vocal in Texas) want. Manziel only played two years of college. His maturity has been questioned, personally and as a player. His habit of improvising, while exciting to watch, might not work so well in the NFL.

It currently appears that the Texans are leaning towards Clowney. I liked Wade Phillips, and I know little about Romeo Crennel. If Crennel can come up with schemes to utilize Watt, Clowney, Cushing (if he stays healthy), etc., Clowney might be a good pick.

Many fans and members of the local media have been concerned about the Texans finding/drafting a QB. Using a #1 pick on a QB is damned-if-do-damned-if-you-don't and a hit-or-miss situation. I lean towards Smith finding a solid QB to lead the Texans.

A side note, possibly very important: Andre Johnson has missed the first two days of the Texans' "voluntary" mini-camp. Obviously Johnson, as a talented 10 year veteran doesn't need the mini-camp. There is speculation (just speculation) that Johnson could be traded to a team with a "now or never" need for a good WR, even one nearing the end of his career. I would hate to Johnson go, but would be very happy to see him land with a team with a very good chance of making it to the SB.

So, before the names get called, what are your thoughts on the NFL 2014 draft? Specifically, how do you think that your team(s) and/or your favorite college players will do in the draft?

I don't follow professional and college football closely enough to guess as to who's getting drafted by what team when.

I have no idea if Clowney deserves to be the #1 pick.

I seriously thought that the Texans would've made a deal to trade down. They might yet; it's my understanding that deals can be made right up to the last minute. We should know something in a little less than two hours.

I'm just hoping, hoping, hoping that the Bills don't do something really stupid like trade up.
They have too many needs to give away multiple picks for one player.
And they will be sorry if they trade away their 2015 first rounder, then EJ Manuel is a bust and need to draft another QB next year.

The Texans did as expected. No last minute deals reported.

If the Texans don't draft a 'noteworthy' QB, our QB situation could prove to be interesting. As previously posted, the scouts and Rick Smith do a good job of finding underrated players. I'm still pulling for Keenum, but he didn't help his case (pun) last season.

I need to look over the picks so far to see if anything jumps out at me.

IMO Manziel is in for a shock regarding the difference between college & the NFL. Given how far down he dropped, 22nd pick, apparantly quite a few teams are thinking the same thing.

I agree. And he gets to play for the Browns. One report said the Browns owner was crazy about Manziel; it didn't say anything about the coach(es) being crazy about Manziel.

The bad news is here in Houston we're still going to get Manziel reports ad nauseum in the news.

For the same reason, I expected the Texans to trade down.

If nothing else, Manziel leave the NFL with lots of $$$$$, even if he's a flop.

I have mixed feeling about him.
One, I dislike texas a&m because of the old SWC rivalry.
Two, I dislike most aggie fans in general.
----I acknowledge that holding where he chose to attend college against him is childish.
Three, how the sumlin hiring was (mis)handled really pissed me off.
----Maybe it was supposed to be secret, and the leak came from the UH, not a&m. I don't know. Most likely it wasn't Manziel's fault.
Four, little johnny has a lot of maturing to do. To be fair, not many 20 year olds are used to that kind of attention & pressure. I, and many others, would probably be an arrogant prick under the same circumstances.
Five, maybe he'll struggle for enough years to learn some humility, then be successful.

    -----------------------------------------------------

So other NFL fans, how have your teams done in the draft so far?

I pretty sure he had plenty of that at txam. I'd love to what the txam alumni members offered him to stay. The only good thing about him leaving is now the aggies will be an average team, & sumlin will be revealed to be a lousy coach when he doesn't have a hot QB (I can hope & dream).

Hey folks, tell us WHY you like/don't like your teams picks.

  15.

When I got home from work, I popped on to Yahoo Sports, saw Matt Millen as a draft analyst and immediately closed it down. How the hell does anyone listen to anything that SOB says about football, anymore... especially about drafting. His record with the Lions was historically bad. Then, Millen protege Mayhew proceeds to ignore the team's defensive needs and drafts a hybrid TE at #10. I get it, Caldwell loved having a hybrid TE at Indy (Clark), but he had Peyton, as well. OC Lombardi had a hybrid TE with the Saints (Graham), but Brees. Is Ebron the missing piece to raise Stafford to that level? Can they score enough to make up for their defensive shortcomings? Can the Lions staff buck their trend and find some diamonds-in-the-rough in the later rounds?

I am encouraged by the Van Noy pick in round 2. Not quite the stud they could have scored in round 1, but maybe a LB upgrade.

I'm not going to be a frump here, just give my perspective.
Personally, I don't pay attention to the draft...nor any of the pre-season maneuvers.
    Too many variables.
I simply wait until the first seasonal game, because that's when it settles down. (for all a boiling pot can settle down)
But even then, I don't pay real attention until the 2nd game...because I feel the real deal can be set down then.
The 3rd is even better, because now you can do trend analysis.

However, that's just me...and everything counts...and all aspects are valuable if you're into it.
So have fun kiddos, I'll meet you at the starting line. ;)

Shit! It looks as though the speculation was true, which I guess isn't that surprising:

Andre Johnson is making comments about not wanting to wait for the Texans to rebuild. I can't say that I blame him because, among other problems, the QB situation in Houston is still up in the air. Andre is at the tailend of a great career.

As some reports mentioned, he'd make a great #2 receiver for probably at least a couple of more years, and could help the right team.

I'm guessing that O'Brien & crew didn't spend enough (ANY?) time speaking with Johnson prior to the draft.

He had a bad combine, he did pretty poor in the 40 and bench, among other things. A lot of his stats were compiled against the bad teams. So lots of people had him pegged in the lower rounds even before his announcement. Maybe a few teams passed due to the media attention, but I don't think he would've been more than a late 4th or a 5th rounder at best anyway.

At the end of the day, hopefully he is judged entirely on his football skills.
