If I didn't have a bunch of friends in your military who happen to be pretty knowledgeable, I would have the impression that Charlie Wilson may have been the only American who properly understood the past and present role of the US in Afghanistan.

Oh, I certainly recognize the vast amount of apathy coming from the US population.

I'm talking about discussions on the US in Afghanistan, though. The Americans in the discussions I was part of have never failed to raise the point "we should get the fuck out and let them sort their own shit out". You don't get to say that after being a primary 25-year cause for the shitty state the country made out of a pile of rocks is in. And when you finally come in directly, you are busier appropriating war funds to corrupt contractors than building infrastructure and educating the uneducated, prone-to-extremism masses.

There are so many reasons why the US can't say "we've done our job and tried, let's pack up and leave".

After those discussions, it does make me happy to know that there is a group of COs in your military that fully understands the picture.

 

For better or worse, they're just making work for themselves. And if not themselves, then their grandchildren. That region of the world isn't going to become a bastion of Western ideals anytime soon and maybe that's for the best.

And we can say anything we want to nobodies as a major world power. Fuck Afghanistan. Just because somebody fucked up in the '80s doesn't mean we need to pave their parking lots in the '00s. When does it end, man?

If both sides are eating a shit sandwich... it only tastes different to the one that's been eating it longer. Clue me in to how any of this helps the US. It's our goddamn time and money. Would Germany still be in A-stan?

The best way to avoid burying yourself is to stop digging. The military-industrial complex ain't havin' that, though. The GWoT was a fuckup because we didn't slay bodies, wreck shit and peace out in like 2004.

It's certainly not your job to instill your ideals in another country's population. However, it is your job to responsibly follow-through with the reconstruction of the country you helped destroy. There were more than just a few flaws in your entire "reconstruction efforts".

Why eat a shit sandwich when you have all the right ingredients available and are the one making the sandwich?
