I wish I could.....

Yesterday a friend said "Oh I wish I could do that" while watching a you tube clip of a guy doing a front somersault.

It got me thinking how many of us actually make any sort of effort to try and do these things we wish we could?

Personally I have always wished I could windsurf, it always looked so fun, I can report it is fun but its hard work too! I also have always wanted to do somersaults on a trampoline and have recently joined a trampoline club - I can now front somersault and can do an assisted backwards somersault!

    What about you?

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

I have always wanted to be involved with curling.
There is a really good club about an hour from here I just don't have the free time to do it.
    Some day.

  3. I wish I could play the cello:

It wold have been helpful if I would have pushed harder as a child to learn this, because it's hard to find the time as an adult to learn. When retirement rolls around (if I even live to see it), my fingers will probably be to gnarled.

I've always wanted to race cars. Curious if I'm as good as I think I am.
I've owned a couple cars worthy of autocross, but sadly there are no clubs around here that I am aware of.
I wonder what kind of reaction I'd get if I brought the Hybrid to a meet....

I wish I could sing well. Unfortunately, my singing voice hurts animal's brains.

ZombieSquirrel - that's the song you've chosen to share. If you could play no more than that song nicely, would that make it worth while? IF you could just play the first 5th nicely, and the rest ok apart from some of the faster bits which might sound a bit rubbish ... would that make it worth it? Oh .. and have you still got a cello?

Fremen What stuff would you want to sing if you had to choose one, two or max three songs/styles?And what lets you know that your singing voice hurts animals brains? And had you given yourself or been given a CHANCE to begin to learn, before the 'Fremen Ye Hurter of Ye Animals' Braynes' label slapped on to you? How do you know that it is not your 'I Have Not yet Learnt To Sing' voice which causes bestial melt-down? And do you have a way of recording and posting it in a private place?

LinaT14 What do you sing/play? And what you need for it to feel like or 'be' a band? There are groups of friends who perform live. Ther are also groups who exist virtually ... sending recordings to each other and fitting them together. What's the 'shape' of your band?

Me .... VIOLIN is an instrument which spent a lifetime eluding me. From the age of 7 until just a few years ago, it was an 'I wish I could do that'. Soul destroying, because firstly, I was never quite giving up, and secondly, the sound box is under my chin, so I'd be the first one to get punished, and loudly, for every crime I committed.
But I cracked it, and I can play.

Something I still Wish I could do, is to jump off a tall building on the end of a rope and abseil down like a swat team member. I reckon that will happen in three years time.

Oh, and to go on one of those walking holidays where people go a massive distance over 10 days ... averaging 10 to 14 miles a day. That intensive experience.

More realistically, I wish I could travel the world... London, Paris, Amsterdam, Dubai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Rio De Janeiro, Sydney and New York..... I want to take pictures of my adventures and sort of have a "trail" of where I've been going through my house...

I wish I could learn how to speak Dutch, it was my moms first language and I would want to pay homage to my heritage....

I have tried time and again to learn to play keyboards but i am quite stubbourn. Bought a inexpensive Casio and I'll play for days at a time until I can play and read about 6 or 8 bars, then 'll not try again for six months.

as a fantasy, if it were possible I'd learn every language known to man and then just walk the earth talking to people.

Zen, I was being facetious. :)
First, my speaking voice sounds (to me) like I'm speaking in a barrel, secondly, I can hear that I can't sing well, and my friends and family have confirmed it.

I still like singing, though. Just, it shouldn't be heard by anyone. So, I crank the music up a bit. ;)

As for songs, I'll sing anything other than hip-hop.

  14. Figuring out the meaning of my life would be nice but it eludes me.

I wish I had the willingness and patience to learn to play guitar and be one of those people who take requests around a campfire. I've attempted to learn to play but it just doesn't sink in.

Another thing I would like to do is run a marathon. I am working on that.

Some really cool things here I wish I could do too. It wasn't until a child asked me why not, I wondered well why not, why shouldn't I learn to do somersaults!! Its been scary but so much fun!
One slightly more dreamy I wish - I wish I could fly in one of those wing suits, imagine the feeling hurtling across the sky - wow

Yea me too I guess I will just need to settle with trying to be happy with what I've got!

  16. I've never owned a cello. The expense would hinder my goals too. I would like to play really well and more than just one song. It just happens to be one of my favorites.

My wife and I did 10-14 miles a day in the Dolomites. It is very doable and quite enjoyable. The trails are well marked, huts have incredible food, beer, and showers. The scenery was intense, the exertion was not. My pictures should still be over on the old site.

    FWIW, we're 55.

One of my favourite stories is about the guy who went to watch a virtuoso performance by an elderly concert pianist. Afterwards he was gushing in his praise of the man's skills and talent, telling him, "I'd give my whole life to be able to play like that!!!" The old pianist smiled gently at him and simply replied, "I did."

When I am coaching, I tell my players that practice does not make perfect... it makes permanent. You will always do it the way you practice it, so make your practice perfect. Only perfect practice makes permanent. As well, any person can master a skill with dedication and practice. A report I once read said that with 4,000 hours of practice, anyone can become competent with just about any human activity. Then talent takes over. With the same number of hours of practice as Michael Jordan, I would be a competent basketball player. I would not be an NBA class basketball player. Michael has more talent than I do (damn!!!).

But for everyone who tells me "I wish I could do that like...", I always think back to the story of the pianist. Everyone would love to have the result, but few are willing to pay the price to get there.

I took piano lessons as a kid, as well as violin. When I got into college I started singing in a church choir. Later, I joined a church worship band first as a vocalist, and then also keyboards. Started writing sings, then I picked up guitar and bass in the next several years after that.

I guess I've really never had the nerve to try to get a hand together to play my stuff... and I miss the synergistic atmosphere if playing with other musicians. I still pick up my guitar and mess around.

Hi ZombieSquirrel and Fremen, thank you for giving me more of the picture ... I get so excited when music is involved.

LinaT14, thank you too .... I'm wondering .. .have you ever tried multitracking ... adding extra voices, guitars, bas and drums? I know the synergy of which you speak ... a lot of my work has been done across the web with people who are familiar with the software. It has a different feel from jamming, but it can have it's place as a joint creative process if you find the right people.

I'll mention another 'Wish I Could' of my own ....

    Parcour

My favourite activity in the gymnasium was to set up all the equipment and throw myself around the place without touching the ground. First time I saw a parcour film, I knew it was for me.

    All the best :)
