Whenever I get phish emails that look like authentic, graphic-rich emails from banks (until you read the text), I always get a little pissed off. I'm always thinking, "What? You think I'm some senile senior citizen or something, thinking that my online banking security needs 'authorized'? I don't even have an account at Bank of America!"

But, you know, when I get a phish email that looks like an authentic, graphic-rich email from Battle.net, I'm, like, "What? I won a free key to the new, upcoming expansion to The World of Warcraft?!" [squees]

    "Oh wait."

    "Shit."

    [heart breaks]

I think I'll call it "hysterical hedonism."

So my favorite magic wand has a frayed cord.

My husband, ever the engineer, has the entire thing disassembled and is fixing it for me. He's so awesome.

What does it say about me when my initial vision of a "magic wand" was a sex toy,
having nothing to do with gaming?

I also don't appreciate the "faux wisdom" that circulates a lot on images that people post on Facebook. These either state the blatantly obvious/circular (like the logic of "it is what it is") or something that isn't necessarily true (and may never be, or may not need be).

I don't think of it as "gaming" per se, but as fantasy or magic.

On the question of thinking of a "magic wand" as a sex toy or as a magical object, I ask you this: Why not both?

(I think there is some fiction in there somewhere, eh, @snowy ?)

Speaking of misquotes or just plain saccharin sweet-ness of Facebook posts, @snowy and @Baraka_Guru , this was circulating on my FB feed for about a week.

Even I, with my limited formal education, had to roll my eyes at the obvious false quote.
Cars were barely around back then, much less "fancy" cars.

I considered de-friending some of the people who "liked" the posts because I knew they were supposedly educated.

Yeah, Wilde died in 1900. I think "automobiles" were still called "horseless carriages" back then. :p

Now see, I didn't even think of that, and I knew that in the back of my mind. That's why we pay you the big bucks, B_G. The total recall.

Now get your ass to Mars!

One interesting point someone made on this quote was that perhaps Wilde meant "fancy private railway car." :p

There's an interesting book by Ralph Keyes which analyzes the process by which quotations get sharpened and misattributed:

"Nice guys finish seventh": False phrases, spurious sayings, and familiar misquotations

Of course she was talking about a sex toy. That's why we were joking about it.

Is this where we joke about whether it's better to use the magic wand or Bigby's clenched fist?
