What are you giving up for Lent?

Follows the usual Jewish holiday pattern: God might kill us, everybody fast and say we're sorry, lets eat in 25 hours.

I gave up giving up something for Lent, that was after I gave up Catholicism the year before.

Hey, you crazy Lenters! How about I give up all y'alls' faces?!

But seriously. I think about what is at the core of Lent quite often. In Buddhism, it is taught to contemplate the impact of clinging and desire, etc., and to realize that states such as pleasure and pain are both transient and inevitable. It is in letting go of these longings that we find freedom from them.

In a nutshell anyway. Don't come to me for a source of such wisdom.

Most religions have some sort of fasting/denial of something in order to kickstart contemplation, etc.

As much as secular society has maintained the more joyous aspects of religious celebration (Christmas, etc.) I think we should find a way to engage in things like Lent, Ramadan, Yom Kippur, etc. in a way that brings the inner contemplation without all the guilt and trappings of religion.

I don't really do faith based things, but I was asked, and I thought a lot about it.

Giving up one form of over indulgence to substitute in another seems like cheating. So I decided after a long period of introspection to try and give up greed.

Harder than it sounds, I realise.

I jokingly said coffee to my wife (she's the Catholic, I'm United - we don't do that stuff). She responded that she'll give up sex.

Nah they're Catholic. Anal not being sex is the oldest workaround in the book.
