You can get them from Amazon, among other places.

    http://www.amazon.com/Teraforma-122...X2DE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1314641148&sr=8-1

There are also more elaborate sets that come with whiskey glasses, if you so desire.

I've seen some variant of the Whisky rocks available on Amazon.com, though they've gotten a lot of unfavorable reviews. Maybe those ones are just knock-offs and the real thing is better.

The link I posted has about 3.5 stars. Reading through some of the best reviews, people are claiming that "true" whiskey drinkers will notice the difference in temperature and love it. Reading through some of the worst reviews, people are saying the difference in temp is too small to notice. I'm wondering if at least a few of the people who said that poured too much whiskey in. The product says it's basically for a tiny pour only. One guy who reviewed it poorly actually said he dropped them in white wine, so I'm guessing he wasn't following the "don't pour past the top of the rock" direction that comes with the product.

I'll post my own thoughts once I give them a shot.

I've been drinking Maker's since college, though I've tried Knob Creek and Woodford Reserve. Knob Creek is the most overpriced drek I've potentially ever had the misfortune to purchase. Harsh and obnoxious that. Woodford is definitely a step up from Maker's, but I'm not sure it's enough of a step up for me to really be willing to pay the higher price tag.

My friend, who is quite the bourbon drinker, has recently been espousing the virtues of Bulliet. He says you can't beat it for the price. Does anyone have any experience with it?

  7. Interesting comments on Knob Creek. Almost picked that up on a few occasions, glad I didn't.

Yipes... guess I can't tell good bourbon from overpriced drek. Good to know, better choices next time.

I remember one night in a bar with my boss at the time and a few other mates from work.

He was hugely entertained (well we were all drunk) by the sexual connotation of "knob's creak" and kept buying shots of it and forcing me to "take my knob" etc etc.

I was pretty drunk and couldnt even tell you whether it tasted ok or not.

On the ice thing, I always thought "real" whisky drinkers insisted you have to drink it neat with no ice to dilute the flavour?

Like I said, I normally take mine by the neck, but thats just how I like it. I think the above is pretentious idiocy though, people should take their drink however they like it. If you like ice (of coke with it) or whatever else, then thats what you should have, who cares what some pompous expert thinks is the "correct" way. My old grannie used to drink whiskey with ginger ale...

  10. I'm probably not a real whisky drinker. I just like it cold.

I have a friend who drinks rye whiskey with tonic water for a mix. And I miss the old "shakes head" smilie that should go at the end of the previous sentence.

I don't care for bourbon. I prefer scotch. It's about the only liquor that I drink. I have a bottle (of bourbon) in my cupboard in case someone else wants some. I don't even remember what kind it is, and it may be Tennessee whiskey, for all I know, I didn't realize there was a difference. I don't even mind admitting ignorance about something I care nothing about.

    1) The whiskey rocks are a cool novelty (pun intended). I used about 6 of them (the most I could fit in my glass without stacking them) and poured the Maker's 46 up to the top of the cubes. They drop the temp of the whiskey enough to tell a difference, but not enough to really cool it. I would say it would be about equivilant to chilling your glass in the fridge for 30 mins before pouring the whiskey in. So if you are looking for a profound difference you won't find it, but again, it was enough to notice IMO.

    2) I had the opportunity to try some Pappy Van Winkle 20yr bourbon this weekend. Wow, it was easily the smoothest bourbon I believe I've ever tasted. Outstandingly smooth! I kept waiting for it to bite, but it was just a rich smooth finish. Highly recommended if you can track down a bottle.

  13. I prefer scotch and still have dreams about the ONE time I had Johnny Walker Blue.

I do like Woodford Reserve though as it tastes like the KY Derby. Drink it neat or in a Mint Julip, the only "drink" I'll entertain for bourbon. It's too tasty to drink any other way.

  14. KY Derby conjures up a whole lot of thoughts not related to bourbon :p

That pic caught my eye, as I have one of those gorgeous square glasses on the right.

Anyone else interested can get one here:
Blade Runner Whiskey Glass - Arnolfo di Cambio Double Old Fashioned - Cibi DOF - by Cini Boeri
The vendor is a pleasure to deal with, unlike me.

On a more related note, I'm not a bourbon drinker, but I do have a bottle signed from the late Booker Noe:

It's been over a dozen years, so I expect the bourbon is no good anymore. :p

I've forbidden my old lady to even touch any of my personal glasses, as she's notorious for dropping her own coffee mugs.

I like both these points! I am definitely going to have to at least try the glass cooling trick.

As for Pappy... this is why I like it too. If you are ever in Louisville and need some help getting pointed out for bourbon flights at some of the places downtown, let me know!

There is an outside chance I'll be back down there for work sometime this winter. If I am, I'll be sure and ask for your advice. :)

Last time I went to Jeff Ruby's, it was awesome.
