When I was young (high school), I learned that Shakespeare in the classroom is really dependent on the teacher. A good and involved one can make it come alive, despite the differences in the language.

I'll just bet that you were awesome! More kids need to discover Shakespeare. Nothing like it.

I got a lot of positive feedback from my freshmen this fall on the R&J unit we did. One of the things I already knew going into it was that my passion for it would make all the difference in getting them hooked in--that is something my mentors have emphasized to me through the years. I opened the unit with a lesson on the history of the English language; it showed how Elizabethan English is closer to modern English than not. I also showed off my collection of Shakespeare-related books, and emphasized that Shakespeare is a journey. I didn't wake up one day magically understanding Shakespeare; rather, it is a skill I've actively cultivated through the years, and I openly admitted that books like Shakespeare for Dummies come in handy when first learning to read the plays (I still use it--in fact, it's sitting right next to me on my desk). We also did a lesson on how to read Shakespeare, which they said was very useful, and helped the play to be less intimidating. Every single day, we timelined what had happened, so they could actively see that they DID understand what was happening. That, I think, did a lot to make them feel good about Shakespeare, and I had a number of students ask me what to read next.

You are doing a great service for our culture, @snowy. Without teachers like you we'll see fewer and fewer learn to love great literature. What a waste that would be.

One of my proudest moments as a dad came when my daughter came home from a day at a local high school. They were doing a Shakespeare play in English. She was absolutely incensed that the teacher wasn't having the class read the whole play! They were just doing excerpts. That made me smile!

That is sadly becoming the norm as there is just so much content to get through and we cannot rely on students to do the reading outside of class any more. We have to have time to read in class, unfortunately. I've found audiobooks help a lot as they keep the pacing.

I get to snag a powder day at Vail without 10,000 other people trashing the roads and snow.

Go Broncos, I won't be watching.

...I wake, rested, windows open, with the sun shining in and birds chirping outside, instead of with an alarm clock.

On Saturday I planted a rose bush (Mother's Day gift from my wife & I) and two hybiscus bushes (MD gift from my sister & BIL) for my mom.

IIRC you didn't miss much, at least as a Bronco's fan.

When I can cum and the dog doesn't hear it. Seriously, anytime it's playtime, our pooch thinks I'm being throttled and barks her head off.

We're all pretty open minded here, Katia. What you do in your own home is entirely your business.
