So, I fire up iTunes on my laptop, and put on my headphones, with the idea of shutting out the noise from the TV my wife is watching.

A little dialog box pops up saying an update to iTunes is available.

I think, sure, they probably know what they're doing, and click on "install update".

The update installation runs for a while and then fails.

I shrug and turn back to iTunes. It doesn't work.

Apparently the update installer stole some critical files. A dialog box tells me to reinstall iTunes.

Grumbling, I go to Apple's web site to download iTunes.

After about three tries, I get it to download, and then run the installation program.

    Which fails.

    itunes-failure.jpg

Naturally, none of the three options (abort/retry/ignore) do anything good.

And this supposed issue with "privileges" never came up before when installing or running their software.

So, now iTunes is gone. My music library is gone. I am quietly steaming.

All that money that I spent on iTunes music, all flushed away because I stupidly clicked OK to update the program.

I guess I get to start fresh with Google Music or something, and try to reconstruct it all.

The annoying TV continues to blare loudly with commercial after commercial after commercial, all of which I have heard dozens of times already. I know better than to complain about the TV, because it will only cause a scene.

My wife says, you should get in touch with Apple.

That sounds like a fool's errand to me. I figure they will send me to some cryptic and cheerfully unhelpful manual page, the way Microsoft always does. If I call them, a recording will tell me I need to call back at 11:00 am Pacific time or something. Or maybe I will wait on hold for 90 minutes of "your call is imporant to us -- please continue to hold" (repeated endlessly at 30 second intervals) and then get abruptly disconnected.

No, really, my wife says, you should talk to their customer service.

To my surprise, the Apple web site has a support function. If you type in your phone number, it promises to call you back in less than 2 minutes. And they did.

And a patient lady with a deep South accent walked me through a few dozen steps to recover from whatever this problem was.

"Told you so," says my wife.

Not for everyone, apparently. They don't like us pee-ons up here in the north. :(

I'm finding more feasible opportunities on elance, surprisingly. (A few, anyway.)

But here's one recent lameness I found (paraphrased after being run through the bullshit grinder):
    • "I need a proficient editor to edit my 50,000-word book for $0.66 per page. Any bid higher than $0.66 per page will be rejected."
    • Translation: If an actual proficient editor makes a bid, it will be rejected.
    • What they're really asking: "I want you to edit my book. Depending on how shitty it is, you will be paid somewhere between $1.50 and $5.50 an hour."
    • What will probably happen: A shitty "editor" will spend a few hours on it, and they'll both love it. Readers won't.

You know, in all likelihood, these jobs are probably often taken by those who don't need the money but love editing that much. You know, like retired high school English teachers and whatnot.

When I was first elected to my current job, a newspaper reporter wrote a piece about me, my background, my plans, etc., roughly 2,000 words.

He sent it to me for fact checking. I found many errors, both in fact and in grammar.

I wound up largely rewriting the whole thing.

    He was effusively grateful.

My version was published (fortunately, under his byline).

    Now, that's journalism!

I think I can stand being married a little better, or at least in a budding relationship....

I can understand that. Especially for many men, being married/in a committed relationship is somehow better.
Then there is the grass-is-always-greener-on-the-other-side contingent, usually blissfully happily single or in a not-so-blissful committed relationship.

I can't say that I've ever been blissfully happily single as an adult but I think I could be. I've been in all the other permutations though. After <counts> 23 years, the relationship I'm in is a good one.
I wish you the best, @streak_56.

I feel as if I've done as far as I can go with the happily single, there's more I want to experience with someone.... as I've said to people around me many times, I've honestly only been searching for a travel buddy....

  20. I just narrowly missed a taxi spinning twice as it slid sideways across four lanes of I-75. I had been following it for about a mile and just changed lanes because I didn't trust it was fully under control. Holy shit! I'm still a bit shaken by it.
