My neighbor/used-to-be-friend tried for years to get me to watch Battlestar Gallactica, despite my saying that I don't usually care for sci-fi. As others have posted, he says it's was a well-done series that just happens to be sci-fi. He did not, however, offer to loan me his DVD boxed set(s?).

 

I'm guessing it is a function of the staging requirements (including orchestra), cost of production (and local theater guarantees), limited tour schedule, etc. I think you'll find the same with most national tours of Broadway shows.

BTW, the revival, which has taken some heat for turning the original operatic version into a more musical theater version, was pretty awesome right from the first bars of Summertime. The guy playing Porgy really carried the show on his shoulders, much more so than the more understated Bess.

A back story:

The first touring production of Porgy and Bess in 1936 made history at the National Theater by being the theater’s first fully integrated audience. Todd Duncan, the original Porgy and a Howard University music professor, along with Anne Brown, the original Bess and a Baltimore native, led the cast in a strike until management at the National Theater agreed to temporarily set aside its segregation policy.

Original Gershwin scores were on display in the lobby.

A friend's mother died in California. Today, there was shiva at his house.

My friend seemed to be holding up pretty well, but his wife quietly told me how difficult it had been for him, and continues to be.

I also saw some people there I hadn't seen in years.

There was a family there (mother, father, daughter) who used to be very good friends of ours. Around a dozen years ago, they backed away. I think it was because the mother developed a distaste for us. At the shiva, she barely looked at me. But her husband and I chatted amiably for some time.

 

Should we get pink scissors for the first birthday party?
