Tattoos are as diverse as the canvases they are on so if I were asked my opinion, I need to see the actual tat on a specific person and then I could render it.
I have ear piercings, which at the time I got them pierced, greatly upset my father (he also told me, when I got one of those "afro" perms in the late 70's that I looked like a Times Square hooker--funny guy, my dad). I had to wait until age 16 to get pierced ears but I always wear ear adornments. I like being able to paint my face (wear makeup) too, especially for dress-up like on Christmas.
    Isn't it all about self-expression?
Tattoos are permanent, yes. But so is the not-natural colour of my hair. I'm not ever letting it go gray. For me, I don't see the difference--personal choice, self-expression.

P.S. The more I see judge-y stuff the more aware I am of the times I get judgmental. So judge-y folks, thank you.

So, you voted yourself off the island? Interesting tactic.

True, but I've found the best camouflage is looking like a department store mannequin fresh from the mall.

I am a big fan of wearing long sleeves all year 'round, though. Dem UVs be evil. And French cuffs be sexy.

Just as long as the W isn't money.

    /Sellout to the MAXXX (TM)

    ...

Also, I love all these threads where people post top notch nihilist shit like:

"I don't give a fuck about you not giving a fuck about people who give a fuck."

Please, do continue telling us all to STFU using as many snarky $9 words as possible.

It really makes me wanna start that thread detailing why I like girls in triangle bikini tops.

I did. It was brash and probably ill-considered, but I'd do it again. I totally got a tattoo before I fixed my teeth, and in fact, I don't plan on fixing my teeth ever, because fuck you (not you, Planny). Who spends thousands of dollars trying to look like people in magazines despite the fact that they'll never actually be a motherfucker in a magazine no matter how much of their flexible spending account they drop on orthodontics.

I agree. But I prefer working in jobs where the best camouflage is doing a good goddamn job.

Me too. And the rolled up sleeve look is a total fucking winner, tattoos or no.

The W definitely isn't money, though the money isn't necessarily bad. And if I ever do want to sell out, I'm on the west coast, where a lot of well paying 'professional' jobs give no shits if you come to work in your pajamas, tattoos ablazing. Where you wear a suit and people are like "Check this motherfucker, what's he trying to prove?"

I like the threads where it's like "everyone share your opinion", which are apparently supposed to be discussion free zones of context-free opinion sharing where, if someone has the audacity to question a previously expressed opinion, pants are shit, feelings are hurt and christmas is canceled.

I'm guessing that obvious dental problems are more of an employer turn-off than full-sleeve tattoos.

But fixing them takes more than money.

I had a friend, intellectually brilliant, whose severe oral problems made him un-presentable, borderline unemployable, and constantly broke.

Indeed, he used to argue that his bad teeth were a disability under the ADA.

One night, he stopped a burglary in progress, showing real courage, and earning the gratitude of several very affluent business people.

As a reward, he was offered the opportunity to get his teeth fixed. A local dentist was lined up for this.

But he refused even to give the dentist an opportunity to assess his problems. The prospect of sitting in a dentist's chair even once was just too terrifying. So nothing was done.

At least he stopped claiming his teeth as some kind of disability.

There certainly are varying degrees of teeth fucked-upedness. My teeth aren't perfect. I'm sure they'd prevent me from getting a job at ye olde abercrombie & fitch and have probably preempted a few instances of sexual intercourse. But whatever to that. Sounds like your friend said 'whatever to that' too. Provided he was motivated by something other than irrational fear of orthodontists, I commend his integrity.

We live in a society where being physically unattractive is a detriment to gainful employment in industries where most current employees are, by conventional standards, complete ugmoes. To me, this is much more of an issue than whether a person decides to fix their teeth before they get a tattoo.

Um, let me be clear about this. Really severe dental problems are not just unsightly, they are odor-generating.

My own genetic endowment is for really terrible teeth that decay rapidly. I manage to look (sorta) professionally presentable only by way of assiduous brushing and flossing, and frequent expensive sessions with various dentists. Every one of my 28 remaining teeth has been filled or root-canaled and crowned.

Someone with teeth like mine, but lacking the motivation or resources to maintain or replace them, would be worse off than my friend.

Back in the 1940s, my mother lost all her teeth to decay when she was in high school. My father lost his teeth fighting in World War II. My parents both had dentures when they met.

I understand and I feel for you. I think we diverge in what we assume is implied by 'fix your teeth'.

My teeth aren't perfect but they're healthy. I'd much rather get tattoos than spend money making them all perfectly white, straight and evenly spaced so that I can impress some dude in a suit who wants to give me some bullshit job sitting in a cubicle all day. I think I'll get hired as a nurse just fine by being a good nurse with hidden tattoos.

Its trendy to have a tattoo, basically whatever. Once the tattoos become distracting I think they become "too much" male or female.

On women specifically, I'm a sucker for a tramp stamp, always have been before they had an "official" name but I over all I prefer none.

Not to mention that some teeth "imperfections" are sexy.

And it really is subjective/contextual about the tattoos. Some have one or two tattoos that simply look out of place, while others look fanfuckingtastic with double sleeves.

I've got fucked up teeth but they're functional. I think we all agree here that "fixing your teeth" means making them more functional and not just so you can hang porcelain veneers on them like Tony Robbins.

    ...

Heh, Tony Robbins is a funny character. I wonder if he has a tattoo of himself, Jesus-style. Or maybe some barbed wire on his bicep or a tribal in the shape of the word SUCCESS.

    ...

Hot damn, I'm holding onto this Clark Griswold gem. Signature material. 100% serious.

How did this go from tattoos to dental work? I've seen some beautiful body art that I'm spectacularly impressed with and jealous of. I think the pointless random ones, wrist tattoos with quotes or kids names, and neck tattoos are less attractive on most women. However, the works of art, such as many of the ones MM has posted in the tattoo thread, only enhance the beauty of the woman at times.

That being said, I have six. And don't like any of them anymore. I regret all but one and would love to get them covered up with artwork, but I can't afford it. I got all of mine in places that can be covered because I knew what jobs I wanted to apply for. After I'm in private practice with established clientele, I can do whatever the hell I want. But I still won't put a tattoo where it will sag or where I can't control who sees it.

I guess i have failed to notice the pervasive correlation between tattoos and bad teeth.

I don't have any tattoos. I can see the appeal though and sometimes I can be envious of girls that have them. Some beautiful works of art out there, and if not art, can be downright whorish which can be appealing too. ;)

Never-mind tattoos, I was never allowed to have my ears pierced growing up (I was 27 when I finally had one in each ear). Also, I was never allowed in bingo halls, bowling alleys, or arcades and never got a straight answer as to why. And according to my mother, I have to be very careful about what I wear because she said, "you have a look that can be misinterpreted".

I don't dye/bleach my hair either. I'm in my 40's and it's now somewhat salt and pepper.

Anyways, teeth. I have those. I lucked out in the naturally straight and white department. Do I judge people on there teeth? Nope

I get a kick at thought that natural is the new avant-guard.

I don't hide the fact I have thin, balding hair—I highlight it with a number 0 buzz cut every week. I don't wear any jewellery. I don't have any tattoos or piercings. I wear eyeglasses—I haven't had corrective eye surgery, nor do I ever wear contact lenses. I don't wear cologne or aftershave, nor do I use deodorant with any fragrances. I don't wear fancy clothes. Most of them aren't even new.

Do you know what that makes me?

    Invisible.

    A goddamn maverick.
