No, lol, it was written on a sign outside a store. I have no idea what a big green egg is, therefore it just sounded weird.

These are Big Green Eggs. The bottom one happens to be my BGE. :)

That's what came to mind when I read Big Green Egg. I've never seen one in person, but the BGEs are supposed to be really nice.

ah, so it's not some kind of vibrating sexual device. :p

It comes from a legitimate place, though, sort of. There is a scene in Annie Hall when Woody Allen stops this old man on the street to ask him how he keeps his wife interested in bed and he says: 'We use a large vibrating egg.' That's immediately what I thought of when I saw the sign.

What is so special about the big green egg? Other than its bigness and greenness.

It's very versatile--it can be used for smoking or grilling. My understanding is that it has excellent temperature control and is good for both low/slow and very hot applications.

This. Because it is ceramic, and has very thick walls, it holds temperatures consistent incredibly well. I have literally lit a fire, got the temp where I wanted it, went to sleep for the night, and gotten up 6 hours later to the temp within 15-17* of where I left it. I can smoke ribs, pulled pork, brisket, or whatever at 200-250* for hours with little need to adjust anything (once had it going for over 20 hours straight without adding any charcoal, and still had many hours left), then within 5-10 minutes have it cranked up to 600*+ to sear or grill something.

I use mine over 100x/year easily. On top of all that it has a lifetime warranty and they company has excellent customer service.

I've done a side by side comparison, and talked to several guys who have them. While they are the same principle, they are not as well designed or built, and there are numerous sites dedicated largely to how you can spend time/money to upgrade your Kamado to try to get it to work as good as a BGE. By the time you spend the time and money to do that, you are within spitting distance of the cost of a BGE, and it still isn't as air tight and doesn't have as thick of walls (meaning temps don't hold as steady).

Also, if anyone is seriously considering buying one, I'd recommend researching all the dealers in your area and negotiating with them. I purchased some accessories and a table with mine and got them to knock about $800-900 off the total package price because of it.

FWIW, most of this stuff I've posted can be found in various threads in the Food Forum as well.

  19. There may be something to this beard thing. The branch manager at our credit union was definitely flirting with me a little while ago. Came out of her office and hovered behind the teller, twirling her hair and making small talk and smiling. She never gave me the time of day before. For my part, I exchanged pleasantries with her, but made a point of mentioning my wife in our conversation. Didn't seem to phase her. She went back about her business, but stopped to smile and wave to me as I was leaving.

I'm not the kind of guy to be seriously tempted, but a little ego stroking (as long as that is all that gets stroked) ain't a bad thing.
