Arranging your currency

When you put paper money in your wallet or other repository, how do you arrange it?

Me, I put all the bills right-side-up, in order by denomination. Highest bills in the back, $1s in the front.

I may be a slob in some ways, but obviously I'm accustomed to storing currency in this fashion.

    Is that normal or peculiar?

My first job was as a cashier in a pharmacy. You had to "face" everything in the drawer of the register - all the bills facing the same way lalala.. and at night when you counted the drawer out, you had to have the money stacked to turn it in, exactly how you just described Martian. So since that first job, thats how the money in my wallet always is also.

I do exactly this. (right side up, face front too, high rear, low front)
I did retail for years...they tell you to organize your money.
Also, money advisors say the same.
This is so you will less likely give out the wrong bill and you can count it faster. It saves money.

I hate it when the cashiers give me it all the wrong way...takes me standing in line longer organize it. (and people grumbling behind me...)

What? I am missing something here. I didn't think I was describing Martian.

My first "real" job was cashiering in a grocery store. That same habit you describe has stuck with me ever since.

Yeah with my home trying out for the role of "Chaos" atm, good time NOT to read/reply to forum stuff. I read something by martian just before this and was going to comment and didn't, then read your post here. Was brainfartedly replying TO martian, not saying you were describing him. Could go back and correct it, but as you've already posted, will rephrase here. "exactly how you just described STREET PATTERN".

Many apologies -- I was just confused.

If it helps, I do the same with my paper money. Fives, then tens, then twenties, then (in the rare case that I'm carrying them) fifties, hundreds.

Of course, these days it's becoming much less common for me to carry cash at all. Interac is just too convenient.

There's something endearingly archaic about American cash. The monochromatic steel engravings, the heroic portraits, the cartouches and curlicues, the heavy serif lettering, are all redolent of the Grover Cleveland era.

I've traveled the world and the gospel of the LORD is as follows: Cash Is King. As such, I always carry several of each denomination in my wallet, both US and local. This would make losing my wallet a major loss but it has saved my ass on several occasions. I usually arrange the currency from small to large, with the $50s and $100s going in the second note pouch along. Also: I currently use a Cole Haan wallet (a gift). If you've never had an expensive wallet, there really is a noticeable difference.

Protip: If you're traveling in a dangerous area, it's best to use a "drop wallet" loaded with $1s and $5s, maybe some old credit cards and keep your actual wallet in your front pocket.

    ...

I have a stash of US $2 bills because they're awesome and I wish they had been more popular and modernized. TJ FTW!

I just kind of stuff it in there. I pretty much only carry cash for our cash-only pub down the street.

It's a Hello Kitty wallet, so at least it's pretty, if not well organized.

I almost never carry cash anymore-- I pay for everything with credit or debit cards.

On the very rare occasions I have cash, I just stuff it into my pocket any which way.

  16. I carry cash because it gives me a visual reference to my budget for the week. It slows down my spontaneous spending. Also, tips. I prefer leaving cash for tips. I don't trust that my server will get a fair cut of a tip added to a credit card.

I start the day with the bills sorted by denomination, but when I get change back, it generally just gets stuffed in my pocket. I often end the day with an ugly wad of mixed up money. And I rarely carry cash in my wallet. It's not a habit I've ever developed.

I'm pretty much the same. Cash seems more real to me, I take $200 out at the ATM, spend it, and go get more when necessary. Credit/debit cards for every day bills seems to get away from me. Of course, it's difficult to buy gas without a credit card these days.

20s in back, 1s in front, and all unfolded to avoid sitting on a lump.

I just fold my bills in half and put the folded side at the bottom of the wallet.
I do like to have the faces facing the same way, but the denominations don't really matter to me.

  20. And I hate when they hand you the coins on top of the bills. Makes a juggling act out of putting it away. I always hand the coins over first, then count the bills back to the customer. I know I'm giving the correct change that way.
