They seem to run anywhere from $30 to $300, so I'm thinking $75 to $100
Too small means doing a very small batch at a time, too big is a storage problem....
Reading the comments on the AMAZON site make me even more confused...and is this one of those appliances that becomes a bread baker.....(I see a lot of those in the thrift shops)??

My parents have one. We borrowed it last year for our Super Bowl party. Forgot to return it.....broke it out once to use it since then.....keep reminding them we need to get it back to them but they never seem to miss it.....maybe your bread maker comparison isn't too far off?

It's great if you are having a party or entertaining with junk food appetizer-type snacks. But honestly we don't fry enough stuff to use one, and often times we just use a deep cast iron skillet when we do.

Yeah, just get a cast-iron dutch oven and a thermometer. You can use the dutch oven for a lot of other things.

What you want is a fryer with a lower drain so you can save the oil easily. I got into frying a bit when I taught myself how to cook, but either you get a cheaper "fry daddy" style where it works ok, but you have to pour the oil out rather awkwardly (much like dutch oven), or you spend a lot for a high quality one. If you think this is something you will use often, spend the money, its worth it. I personally got the fry daddy style and it worked fine but its now taking up shelf space in my garage.

You really want to save the oil being thats where the expense is. I made a cheese cloth sieve for mine, but its slow going so it took forever to clean the oil.

I tried the old coffee filter route too, the issue I had was the oil drained slow, so you had to put some in the funnel, wait for it, put another pour in, wait, etc, took like an hour and it was just a pita, and a bit messy.

The trick is to use larger filters. These are also shaped differently. They're designed for oil, not coffee, so they should drain much faster. I used large ones in the restaurant, and there was little issue with the time it took to filter the oil.

Ya'll are making me want something fried. I wonder if gluten-free flour works well for fried chicken...

I think Herc is onto something. If you are going to fry often you don't want to be slopping out oil all of the time.

I like the NINJA (Professional Frying System) F300, Loews has it on sale for $80, "reduced from $100)
Gonna' run (actually prolly drive) over a pick up one...this one will fit in the space I made available, didn't need all those extra plastic take out containers, and the S/S coffee carafe, hmmm, when did I last use that? (into the above storage in the garage)
Next is a gallon of oil, Canola, Peanut, vegetable....??
And I'll definitely take Baraka's advice and order some filters...
