    They do! Fancy ones with TeeVees and cupholders and side impact airbags. They have shock absorbers and oh-shit handles and kill switch tethers, too.

    I run on them occasionally. They suck because I can't easily do wind sprints on them with their levers and buttons and spool-up time and dongles.

    I have some awesome tricks for breaking choke holds. They take little effort too, which is nice.

    No, seriously... the Captains of Crush have been amazing for grip strength training. They're legit hand exercisers in a world of dollar store spring trinkets.

    If you stick with it, you will double your hand strength in a month. I wish I'd known about these things when I was in the military. They're gnarly-mondo.

    I'm sure. I just don't think I need that much grip strength. Not for what I do anyway.

    Seriously, though... I don't get you, bro. How could you ever have too much grip strength?

    You really need it for things like... everything in the goddamn gym.

    Pullups, deadlifts, kettlebell stuff... you name it.

    I got me a few tricks, but I ain't be rippin' no dicks.

    I didn't say you could have too much. I just don't need that much, specifically.

    I haven't been to a gym in years though.

    I don't deadlift anymore, and I never really got into pull-ups. I have enough strength for the occasional kettlebell sesh and for much else that I do, plus my grip strength will continue to increase by other means. (Just not as fast or as much.)

    Though I do appreciate the benefit of such strength for throwing iron around. Or if you work in the trades.

    I was in a Kung Fu class and got kicked out because the sifu could not break my choke hold with his 'tricks'. He could also not choke me, with my very large neck, the result of a lot of weight lifting, which he said would make me slow and easy to defeat...

    One time in the arena a guy tried to use eagle talon hold on my chest. I summoned my inner Bolo Yeung and pec bounced him across the floor.

    Kung fu is mainly for display anyway. Apparently, they use it in the movies.

    But really: This also highlights why I'm often grateful to pair up with a 250 lb. black belt for practicing takedowns, joint locks, and grappling. It teaches you how to figure out the weight/strength disparity.

    This guy was a 6 foot tall ex-marine. Not small by any standards and we were in Wing Chun/self defense. ( Although I tend to agree on the relative uselessness of KF and WC, you might have a fight on your hands with some folk if you say that out loud. The movie/opera version in Wushu, I believe ) I've also been on the floor with some BJJ grapplers and they had a little (tiny) difficulty with my size, though they succeeded in making their holds and chokes work EVERY DAMNED TIME (ouch). I wish my joints weren't so old, because I really enjoyed grappling. I guess I get to stick to being a muscly pacifist in my old age.

    Oh, I wouldn't say that it's useless; it's just not as practical and effective as other arts.

    The core of what I do is more or less a Korean jujitsu in terms of its focus on grappling and ground fighting. It includes striking as well, but its philosophy is about applying the best technique in a given situation, while having options if things don't go as planned. It avoids confrontations that are decided by who is stronger. It's an art that is mostly about self-defence, so it has techniques that are effective despite your size relative to your opponent. It's more about thinking than about strength. (And, quite often, pain—lots of pain.)
