The TFP Health Club

  1. Started working out again this week.

    Gonna start on a legit weightlifting regimen and continue doing cardio in the form of elliptical until I think that my cardiovascular system (and knees) can take the beating of a treadmill.

    Thirty pounds is mighty impressive.

    I'm up 7, but I'm pretty sure it's mostly muscle.

    I'm working on proper pull ups. I can do reverse and I can manage them from a "running start" as it were, but from a locked elbow hang I can only seem to haul myself up about half way. That's a pretty good improvement over when I started and couldn't haul myself up at all, but I guess I'll stick to assisted for now. My workout, as of Wednesday, which is the last day I did resistance:

    Pushups, 3x10
    Lunges, 3x12, per leg
    plank, 2x45 seconds
    assisted pull-ups, 3x9 narrow grip on the first, wide grip on the last.

    Then ten minutes of timed skipping practice.

    I suck at skipping, so hard. I can manage a solid thirty seconds and then I have to take a break, so it's kind of an interval thing right now.

    I'm working on L-sits. They're insane. I can't manage them yet, but it's a work in progress.

    I'm getting pretty good at shoulder stands, in so far as I can do one and not feel like I'm going to fall over and/or break my neck. I sway like a drunk on mardi gras, but I figure for being upside down that's just something I'll have to work on. Core strength. Once I get better at that I'll start working up to a handstand.

    This may not come from me as any surprise, but whatevs:

    If you aren't already doing them, and if you can handle them, I'd recommend focusing on burpees for a few reasons, mainly because they're an all-in-one exercise.
    1. They'll train your cardio (which will help with your skipping endurance).
    2. They'll train your core.
    3. They'll train your coordination/movement.
    4. They'll train your lower body.
    5. Proper variations will train your upper body at the same time.
    Burpees in general may help you work towards the L-sit, but consider doing tuck-jump burpees because it adds another conditioning dynamic. If you're crazy, add on top of that a pushup with each rep. If you're insane, add a pull-up at the top of the cycle as well.

    Burpees are an awesome full-body workout if you want it to be. I always hit my max when I do them. They're a beautiful exercise.

    Perhaps you've done them based on that chart you linked in your blog. But I'm telling you now, do more of them!

    I've done burpees. They're pretty intense.

    Think of the above as kind of a sample routine. I like variety, so I change it up. Pushups and pull-ups are mainstays, but I switch out core work and leg work pretty frequently.

    Still pushing the weights, and riding the bike, but I've let my diet go and now I'm slowly creeping up again. Why do all the things, that are bad for me, taste so good? Anyway I hurt my shoulders a couple of weeks ago and have been trying to go light on them. Hopefully I will be able to start back light this week with benches. I did heavy(ish) squats Saturday and the shoulders took it well.

    Interesting article on alcohol, fat loss and muscle growth.

    I'm not worried about the fat loss part, but as a guy that enjoys an occasional adult beverage in the evening, I was curious about what it did to my gym efforts.

    I stopped 90% of my drinking because I read that it interfered with muscular addition/retention. I don't remember what the scientific explanation was, but it seemed to be legit at the time.

    I miss drinking though...

    I also have to add that I read several articles that stated that weight lifters tend to get reactive hypoglycemia and have a hard time with sugar and alcohol. I get nauseous if I drink too soon after lifting, or eat a lot of sugar. I've never checked my glucose levels though.

    Does anybody else get bummed out on rest days?

    Like, I busted my ass last night. My shoulders and arms have that loose/sore feeling that comes from really pushing it. My legs say no mas. But I still just want to move, and do something.

    Maybe I'll go for a nice long walk this afternoon.

    Shit, I love rest days. I typically do 2 on, 1 off for my current phase.

    Anybody that can go to the gym every day of the week is either superhuman or isn't lifting hard enough.

    Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm down with the importance of rest days. If you don't need rest days you're not really working out.

    It's just that they tend to be restless days for me.

    ...but you have so many hobbies! Guitars, hacking the matrix, your Chia Pet collection, wearing naked black women as reverse trophy scarves, TFP staff stuff, playing zombie shooter games with Baraka, etc. I wish I had those skillz.
