Dunno... nerds get just as much ass as the next stereotype. Maybe a little tabletop board game action is all he needs to get his Terminator into her Space Hulk and clean out the Tyranids of his self-doubt.

 

The older I get, the more I realize what makes a couple compatible has very little to do with hobbies and more do to with life outlook.

 

Hobbies -> personal enjoyment -> happiness -> confidence -> life outlook -> attractive to others -> partner -> lotsa bow-chicka-wow-wow

It's all related.

I came to TFP back in '07 because I was recently divorced and my outlook was decidedly shitty. I'm talking black ink on black paper in a dark room with death metal playing. I'm not a bad person but I was bad company. So picked myself up and I got a hobby (martial arts) that I really enjoyed (personal enjoyment) and became happy with myself (happiness) which put a little pep in my step (confidence) and changed my attitude (life outlook) which made me attractive to others (got hit on by some girls) which... you get the picture. Now I've got a live-in woman, slinging the love spear like a champ, have a completely unnecessary 375hp muscle car in the driveway and put back a half a dozen bottles of champagne a month just because. Life is that easy.

Most of us have this story in some form or another. The key is to show the distraught person about to embark on this magical quest that it is just that simple. Hell, it's not easy convincing a depressed person that life really is a beer commercial.

It really is. You are right you need to be happy with yourself, how you get there though can vary.
