Grandma is a teetotaler. What she doesn't realize is that it's getting to the point where we all need to be drunk to put up with her.

The leek, mushroom, and chestnut pie is in the oven. Time to start getting ready.

    What is best in life?

To crush cranberries, see turkeys roasting before you, and to hear the lamentation of their hens!

I'm sitting here enjoying catching up on TFPers and watching my son and girlfriend cook the turkey dinner. This morning I thought for sure that turkey was going to shoot out of my son's hands and into the living room. Hilarious totally hilarious!!! :D

Back in the early 70's my little sister came home from some gathering or another with a grace that has served our extensive family well these last 40+ years. Catholic, Baptist, Anglican, Jewish, Free Thinker, Protestant, atheist, agnostic, New Age, step kids, foster kids, friends ... It works for every single one of us.

Ugh, the desserts were all STORE-BOUGHT. Seriously, people--I offer to make pies and get snubbed for STORE-BOUGHT?! That's ridiculous!

My husband doesn't understand why I'm irritated by it.

Forgive him. His mother is involved.

A man does not want to get between his wife and his mother. It's best to just shrug and back away...

His aunt brought the store-bought desserts. I don't think his mother knew they were going to be store-bought, so I can forgive her on that score. She did get to try my pie crust since I took a savory pie. My pie crust was clearly better than anything store-bought.

Yep...everything happened as I called them.
But I still liked being down there with them.

ZOMG. That is the worst! I totally feel for you, @snowy!

Our first Thanksgiving as a couple, Mrs. Levite and I went to her folks, and I asked what I could bring. Her mom is totally threatened by my cooking (I can cook, and she is a horrible cook), and so wouldn't let me bring any sides. She said I could bring pie. So I got all set to bake one of my apple-raisin-spice pies and one of my sweet potato and molasses pies. And the day before, my MIL told my wife they had already bought apple and pumpkin pies from Costco. COSTCO! If you're going to fuck over my homemade pies, at least have the courtesy to get your pie-dulterous desserts from an actual bakery!

Fortunately, this Thanksgiving, most everything I made turned out perfectly, and I made virtually everything, so I was well revenged. The only thing that didn't turn out right were the sweet potato latkes-- they just didn't hold together. They ended up being kind of like sweet potato johnnycake. Still tasted good, though....

    I'm glad someone understands.

What really gets me is that this is the same auntie that brags all the time about her cookie baking skills. Uh...if you're so great, why did you bring store-bought pie and store-bought cheesecake to Thanksgiving?! WTF.
