Pointless Announcements

This was a small town and they seemed to take it serious. The minute some folks took out note pad several members walked out. Ashland, Oregon- Great Shakespeare Festival... horrible place for "outsiders" to take notes at the local AA meeting.

 

Well, I was speaking in general terms. But I don't blame them.

That explains a lot. So many people lacked understanding or knowledge - still do. And compassion.
Even today we continue to fight the stigma of mental health problems and their associated behaviors.

If you've ever been involved with AA/NA or read any of Bill W's writing (1895-1971), the book "Alcoholics Anonymous" (1934), you will know that even decades ago before the govt mandated confidentiality - AA already had that covered.

It is only common sense people can be more open and honest about themselves if they trust those around them, if they know their confidences won't be revealed to others without their permission, and believe themselves protected from the scrutiny of a judgmental outside world.

As a health care professional, there is no excuse for that woman - she probably trained many to be insensitive to the feelings of others with her poor role-modeling. Glad that was long ago and she doesn't continue to subvert people's recovery with her inappropriate, harmful actions.

 

Yeah, I always thought if we had simply attended randomly selected meeting one at a time and told people outright we were there to listen and learn so that we might help others, our presence would not have been shunned to the degree it was if any.

The woman was not a health care professional. She was a trained instructor who taught everything from first aide to human resources policy for the government agency that employed her. According to her if she had the curriculum and a manual she could teach brain surgery. Yes, that's a quote from her.

 

I don't have a shred of doubt about that. And it sucks because it sabotaged your chance to sit in a room full of people being real. Some of whom have gone through hell to get there.

 

AND HER ARROGANT WORDS ARE INDICATIVE OF HER OTHER BEHAVIORS/ATTITUDES (which poisoned everything she did, I'm willing to bet tho I usually bet only on the horses)

I've been trained to do MANY jobs. I was BORN sensitive to the feelings of others and TAUGHT to be considerate, polite, honest, and trustworthy. I have 3 college degrees (I love learning) and have tutored numerous people in college (including an entire basketball team) on a variety of subjects from biochemistry to human development to abnormal psych to geometry to piano lessons.

Regardless of what type job you have, your heart and soul - the real you - shows thru by how you do that job.
She lacked any sensitivity and respect when she repeatedly exposed the same group of troubled people to exposure or possible relapse by any members.
I'm sorry but I was a nurse for over 25 yrs on top of training animals - I have absolutely NO sympathy for rude or cruel people, who make the world a worse place for all of us to live.
Just my 'outrageous' opinion.

I ended up having several chances a few years later to sit in on some NA AA meeting. Interesting. Later in my career, much later, I co-facilitated sex offender groups. Different kind of group altogether. Everyone ordered to be there. At first I thought we were making a difference with some. After about the fifth year I became convinced, and remain so, that there is no treatment for such behavior. I have no clue how society should deal with people who commit those crimes. I am sure I not the one to "help them with their problem."

 

Well, now you are treading on the subject of the efficacy of our mental health care system. I've no doubt that when you are working with 'sex offenders' you are working with people with a variety of diagnoses with varying degrees of severity. No, we don't help them by locking them up and giving them group. That there is a thread maybe.
