I use a simple system- unless the service just sucks I toss out a $10 for any check up to $50 and a $20 for checks that are at or near $100. If it's under $20 I throw out a $5. These are the most often amounts I see when my GF and I are out in Merida. I always see folks using smart phones and calc's to figure out what the exact tip should be and honestly unless my service sucked it's not worth the $2.18 I save figuring it out. And if my service sucks I pay a buck or two, at times zip. But it has to be really bad and the waiter has to have a shitty attitude with me to get little or nothing.

Same. I expect that most employers are honest; but the tip is between myself and the server. I always tip in cash.

Another piece on tipping, from the NYTimes:

I agree with the idea of levying a service charge that gets split--so long as everyone in the restaurant is making a living wage. When I worked as a line cook and got my share of the tips, it made me feel like a part of a team, and I think that was true for most of the people I worked with. However, I'd really just like them to earn a great wage and not have the service charge.

I'm in this camp: A tip should be a bonus, not a part of one's core income.

I definitely agree with this, but in many states, the actual hourly wage is jiggered with by the employer to be offset by the employee's tips (as approved by the Fair Labor Standards Act, which doesn't seem particularly fair to me, at all).
I'm willing to bet many don't know this, and those who don't probably don't take it into account when calculating a tip...

I would think that those of us who at some point did some time serving or bussing are well aware of it. The last time I cocktail waitressed was here in Illinois years ago. I made under $2.25 hr on my paycheck. The rest was up to me to earn. I always keep in mind that my server is probably getting shite wages. If I can't afford to tip decently for decent service, then I can't afford to be served there.

I can and do, and for bad service... the tip reflects that.

I have zero issue with people leaving tracts or whatever...IF it is accompanied by a good tip. Otherwise it only makes them look like a hypocrite.

I saw this on the news the other day. This and apparently some church folk have taken to leaving a note that states
"I give God 10% why should I give you 15%?"

If you can't tip in countries where that's how the wait staff earn a living then you can't afford to eat out. So stay home and whip up some Top Ramen or mac-N-cheese.

Does that note work for them with the IRS?

If love is supposed to be the law to live by, what better way to show love to some hard working servers than to over tip instead of under tip?

I have a collection of Chick Tracts that people left me as tips when I was a server.

    No money. Just the tracts.

There was a church back home (I wish I remembered the name of it) that would leave little money envelopes that basically said, "hey, we know church people have a bad reputation when it comes to tipping, and we want to change that," with a 25% tip inside. They were rad.
