If they were indeed smoking pot in their hotel room, they weren't very smart.

An NFL player smoling pot during the season = dumb.
An NFL player smoking pot in his room while on a road for an away game = really dumb.

    Anybody remember Ricky Williams?

I'm not interested enough in RW to spend 55 minutes watching the vid. I'm guessing that he had a fucked-up childhood.

If you haven't been watching the ESPN "30 for 30" series, you've been missing a lot.

And you're not even close on Williams. He's a pretty mysterious dude.

The St. Louis Rams called Brett Favre to check his availability for a comeback. *facepalm*

Favre? Even Tebow would be a better choice than a guy that's been out of the game 3 years.

The joke on ESPN this morning was "Why don't they call Favre and Tebow both to come in that way EVERYONE'S head explodes".

RGIII injured his left knee and took a beating today.

I hope it is nothing serious. I don't think it is. But in general there is no way he can keep playing this style of football and stay healthy.

    Colts V. Texans

First & foremost, I wish Gary Kubiak a full and hopefully speedy recovery.

I have mixed feelings about the actual game. All I wanted a good showing by the Texans, certainly didn't expect them to win.

Major kudos to Ben Tate for playing with four broken ribs. Foster is a great RB and a very likeable guy, but more than a few people are questioning his willingness to 'suck it up.' I know that RBs don't usually have lengthy careers and Foster is probably wise not to risk further injury by playing injured. I don't doubt his dedication to the game, but I'm not going to automatically disagree with those who think "Hmmm."

After the 1st half--before the news about Coach Kubiak--I was pumped, was really glad to see Keenum cutting loose as opposed to the Texans' usual and predictable run-run-pass. Schaub didn't look very happy on the sidelines, but it's pretty safe to say he should probably get used to it, Keenum made good plays in situations where Schaub would've been sacked.

The second half....someone needs to remind the Texans' coaches & players that there are four quarters in a football game. IMO the offense clearly missed Kubiak's play calling, of course it's possible that the Texans would've lost with Kubiak on the sidelines, esp. if Kubiak reverted to his usual ball controll mentality. The Texans needed to add to their lead, but for what ever reason didn't (the Colts are not some bum team that got lucky against good opponents).

    Now for the fingerpointing.
Part of the blame falls on Wade Phillips for not adjusting to the adjustments made by the Colts in the 2nd half.
The offense couldn't get it together in the 2nd half. I've said it before, & I'll keep saying it: Rick Dennison is probably the most invisible & teflon-coated Offensive Coordinator in the NFL. In the past Kubiak has shown misplaced loyalty to his coaches, I seriously think that it's time (past due actually) for Bob McNair & Rick Smith to take a hard look Dennison's performance as OC.
Randy Bullock needs to be replaced. His missing the 55 yarder hurt, but let's be realistic, there aren't a lot kickers (maybe none) in the NFL for whom 55 yards would be guaranteed. It was the previous two misses that should send him packing. I'll point out the obvious: This is the NFL, field goals frequently make the difference in close games, good FG kickers don't choke.

The Texans can kiss their playoff hopes, as slim as they were, goodbye. Unless Keenum turns out to be a case of beginners luck (very possible), the Texans need to start reworking their offense around a mobile passer. Phillps needs to close the holes in the secondary. Maybe "Wait until next year!" will be more than a platitude. Maybe.

I think the Bears shocked everyone tonight.

Obviously Rodgers being knocked out in the 1Q was the biggest factor. I'm hearing a broken collarbone is likely. That would stink, I hate seeing players injured, especially really good ones.

The reports are Kubiak suffered a mini-stroke. That's very serious (I could write a book on what we're going through with my FIL).. The pressure & grind of being a HC in the NFL certainly won't help, I wouldn't be surprised if Kubiak takes a LOA for a while.

What I'm about to write will sound cold, please understand that to me Kubiak's health is priority one, you don't brush aside strokes, even 'it's just a mini-stroke (TIA).'

This development puts McNair & Smith in a tough position. It would be very difficult for them to evaluate the teams progress & Kubiak's future if Kubiak isn't acting as HC.
If McNair is looking to make a change, he needs to do it while the Texans are considered salvageable, esp. if he wants to hire a proven winner who might not be interested in suffering through rebuilding.
If the decision has already been made to replace Kubiak, firing a coach with health issues would come across as taking cold hearted to a new low.
If you factor Wade Phillps into the possibilities, things get even more complicated. I'll hold those thoughts for now.

The Texans are bringing in some kickers for tryouts. They did this before, but decided to stick with Bullock, maybe this time Bullock will get cut.

NFL head coaches are rarely fired during the season, and rarely does a team turn around from how bad the Texans have been to have any real success when they do. Even if the Texans were already pondering a move, I think it happens in the off-season, and I think that is the right call, even if Kubiak were healthy.

Also, I was correct on Rodgers. Broken collarbone is the diagnosis, though it is being called a fairly minor break. He should miss 3-4 weeks they are saying.

Update: I just heard a news report that Kubiak has been cleared to be discharged from the hospital. I sincerely hope that he takes the TIA very seriously.

I think it depends on how you measure success. I agree that Kubiak should be held responsible for the Texans' implosion, and that's certainly reason enough for him to be fired, not to mention he has had seven & a half seasons as the Texans HC. OTOH, he made the decision to start Keenum, & the offense has improved. If the Texans manage to finish strong or at least show some considerable improvement, how to handle Kubiak's future as HC becomes complicated. If Kubiak takes a leave, his role in the Texans turnaround, or continued flop, becomes more difficult to determine.

Wade Phillips. I don't what his thinking might be. If Kubiak takes some time off, Phillps would most likely be named interim HC. How would he react to not being offered the job if Kubiak resigns, or the Texans decide a new HC is needed? I can't see him being offered the HC job with his .500 records as a HC.

Kubiak is the one who is really caught between a rock and a hard place. Many positive thoughts & major healing mojo to Coach Kubiak.

I personally had the thought of making the playoffs in mind when I referred to success.

At this point, if you aren't going to make the playoffs, you are almost better off being horrible. The Texans, with 6 losses halfway through the season in a tough AFC, are not going to make the playoffs. At this point you might as well go into "talent evaluation" mode and see how good Keenum is, as well as giving other young players plenty of time on the field. You are almost better off going 3-13 at this point than struggling to 7-9 or 8-8, considering the draft implications. Just my $.02 as a Tampa Bay fan who at this point is all for them being 1-15 and getting the #1 overall pick.

As far as Phillips, he is a long time NFL vet. He'll get the logic of the Texans not offering him the HC job even if they fire Kubiak. Honestly, he's probably a career coordinator for the years he has left working in the NFL. It makes very little sense (to me anyway) to fire a 'mediocre to slightly above average for his career' HC like Kubiak for another 'average at best for his career' HC in Phillips. If you are going to fire a decent HC, do it to give a young guy you believe in a chance, or do it because you can hire an established guy with a decent past record (Gruden, Billick, Cowher, etc.). Don't replace mediocrity with known mediocrity.

On the assumption that Kubiak resigns or gets fired:

I'm sure that McNair & Smith would make it clear to Phillips that he would not be considered for HC. Maybe Wade accepts that, or perhaps he still has hopes to prove himself as a HC. I don't know. There might be a team desperate enough--not the Texans--to hire Wade as HC. It's a possibility, something to consider.

If the Texans can't land a proven winner, are there any "hot" offensive coordinators or quarterback coaches worth giving a chance? I don't want to see anyone involved in the Texans offense hired as HC, no one has shown that they deserve the shot, most especially Rick Dennison.

I'm not up on that enough to know. I'm sure come Bowl season there will be some college coaches that start being hot names. Same thing with NFL coordinators around the time the playoffs begin. Maybe a top coordinator like an Adam Gase if the Broncos continue to excel with Fox out?
