6 more sleeps! That's right, the puck drops on the brand new NHL season on October 1st at 7PM EST with the first game between arch rivals Toronto and Montreal. 3 games that day (Washington/Chicago; Edmonton/Winterpeg) and the season is underway.

Some changes in division alignment have been necessitated due geographic needs:

The League went to a realigned format for geographic purposes and has decided to stick with geographic names for the four new divisions. Three of the four names are carryovers from the old six-division alignment, but the League added a new name to the mix.
The four division names are Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central and Pacific. The Atlantic and Metropolitan divisions make up the Eastern Conference and each division has eight teams. The Central and Pacific divisions make up the Western Conference and have seven teams in each division.

So the Detroit Red Wings move into eastern play and are now in the Atlantic Division. here's how they line up:

The Eastern Conference has The Atlantic Division and the Metropolitan Division (that's right):

    Atlantic Division

    Boston Bruins
    Buffalo Sabres
    Detroit Red Wings
    Florida Panthers
    Montreal Canadians
    Ottawa Senators
    Tampa Bay Lightning
    Toronto Maple Leafs

    Metropolitan Division

    Carolina Hurricanes
    Columbus Blue Jackets
    New Jersey Devils
    New York Islanders
    New York Rangers
    Philadelphia Flyers
    Pittsburgh Penguins
    Washington Capitals

The Western Conference has Pacific Division and the Central Division:

    Pacific Division

    Anaheim (Mighty) Ducks
    Calgary Flames
    Edmonton Oilers
    Los Angeles Kings
    Phoenix Coyotes
    San Jose Sharks
    Vancouver Canucks

    Central Division

    Chicago Blackhawks
    Colorado Avalanche
    Dallas Stars
    Minnesota Wild
    Nashville Predators
    St Louis Blues
    Winnipeg Jets

The 2013-14 schedule ensures that all 30 teams play in all 30 arenas at least once during the season.

So what are your thoughts on this season? I've heard that teams are bulking up due to the bullying tactics of the Leafs... That's something that I'm not used to.

Sooo... here's to a great year, great input and...

    Game On!!

  2. Have a Jonathan Toews Stanley Cup sweater on order (red). Yes, I'm excited about the season. Wish Detroit was still in the division. Seems wrong.

I've got my Leafs shirt ready to go. It was one of the things I HAD to buy when in Toronto. I blame Martian.

This is the Year of the Leaf.

    I can feel it.

  5. The league could use a geography lesson. Pairing the Florida teams with all of those northern teams seems anti-geographic to me.

The Wings/ Blackhawk rivalry will be missed, but more Original 6 is very welcome.

This does, however, set up the possibility of a Hawks/Wings Cup.

That's encouraging... bodes well for the Leafs now that we're back in the same division :)

Go ahead and think that. We were playing what amounts to our third string while they were playing Crosby. Not the most even match up. :)

oooo... do I detect a wager coming on? A gentleman's bet on the relative outcomes of the season?

I like your retired sweaters pic... Sawchuck. Now there's a name - played lots of years for Detroit. Also the goalie who backstopped the Leafs to their last Stanley Cup victory all those years ago...

PS.... I gotta say - it looks way better in blue.

last two games against Detroit - how fitting, but I'm not liking Alfredsson even though he's no longer with Ottawa...

The Leafs played game nine of their ten game preseason tonight. As such, we saw a close to full roster - one that was missing Phil Kessel to suspension, and Fraser McLaren to injury, but was essentially what we'll see on opening night. The final game will feature a duller roster, to say the least; a final look at players who's fates are unknown, and ability to rest. In the meantime, this was maybe the first real look at the 2013/14 Toronto Maple Leafs.
...but it wasn't a particularly good one. Chalk it up to jitters, lack of chemistry, small sample sizes, whatever you want, but the Detroit Red Wings walked away with a convincing 5-2 victory.
Detroit was first on the board just five minutes into the game, as a point shot by Joakim Andersson flew past Jonathan Bernier, who was heavily screened by Dan Cleary, and some of his own teammates. The Leafs took advantage of a Johan Franzen penalty shortly thereafter, as Mason Raymond set up Nazem Kadri for a half-break to beat Jimmy Howard. Dave Bolland took a slashing penalty as the period passed the midway point, but the score remained 1-1 after twenty minutes.
The second period began with a similar process to the first; Luke Glendening picked up an opportunistic rebound to give the Wings the lead, and Nikolai Kulemin threw a puck off of Joffrey Lupul's foot to tie the game again just four minutes later. The Wings finished the period with the last laugh, however. With James van Riemsdyk in the box for unsportsmanlike conduct, Henrik Zetterberg finished a fancy passing play with a wrister that beat Bernier.
Detroit never looked back from there. Daniel Alfredsson did what he does best, producing against the Leafs when the games don't matter. In this case, he fired a slapshot from the hash marks to bring the score to 4-2 as Lupul, watched from the penalty box (coincidentally, for tripping Alfredsson). Johan Franzen sealed the deal with another powerplay goal with seven minutes to go to give the Red Wings a 5-2 victory.
    NOTES
    • Despite letting in five goals tonight, I liked what I saw out of Bernier. He's a very agile goaltender. If he could find a way to be as positionally aware as James Reimer (or vice versa), the Leafs would have an elite player between the pipes. I won't hold my breath on such a thing happening, but at the very least, he makes it so the Leafs have a solid option on any given night.
    • Mason Raymond and Nazem Kadri seem to be clicking well together. Maybe the upside to the Clarkson suspension will be that Raymond sees time with Kadri on the second line? Both are incredibly fast and appear to be aware of where the other one is.
    • As much as they got away with it last season, getting outshot 37-19 is never a good idea. Especially when you consider that number includes an 8-8 equal footing in the first period. Detroit's style of play is the antithesis of Toronto's, and if this keeps up, may also be the Kryptonite.
    • Both teams are headed to Toronto to close out the preseason tomorrow night. The game starts at 7PM.

    Go Leafs Go!

I'm bummed that I have to go to work here shortly and miss the rest of this game. My scores on Google Now aren't updating correctly, so I'll have to follow on one of my other sports apps.

That's quite the start to the regular season. Once again we see the boys in blue getting sloppy at the end. I was having flashbacks to game seven.

But hey, whatever. A win is a win.

I'm sorry, but why the fuck are you people talking about the Leafs when they're not even likely to make the playoffs?

Here come the Blackhawks, the mighty Blackhawks.....

Ugly, but 6-4 is still a W. And 3 points.
