    Yay, Thursday!

I'm going to make pear chutney when I get home from work tonight. Today's going to be an easy day--go over yesterday's assignment that ended up being homework, then read a short story. I found an audioclip of the author reading it aloud, so I don't even have to do that.

Does it make me some kind of yuppie or bourgeois if I got excited upon discovering that the dishwasher I recently acquired has a setting for warming plates? #nomorehandwashing #prewarmedplates

I just got good news via the US mail, yes you heard right good news. My pension miscalculated my benefit and they owe me some money. They've been under paying me for a few years now so for the next 18 months I'll get a nice increase after which I'll get the amount I should have been getting all along. I got a call from a friend who received the same letter he thinks they should pay him all the cash they shorted him asap plus interest. I'm happy to get the extra and allow the pension board to pay it in a manner that doesn't "break the bank."

I was sick all weekend, up until Tuesday. Now I'm dealing with the post-sick congestion that usually lasts 3 weeks. Wheeeeee

  11. BabySquirrel wanted some cookies last night. Because I'm already THAT mother who caves into her child's request, I made some no-bake cookies. They were Delicious and now I think BabySquirrel is on a sugar high because she's a little Mexican Jumping Bean this morning.

Heh. If it's the same pension I think it is, they miscalculated my dad's once, but in the other direction. He told them to suck it. They did.

I am sitting here in my bra and underwear, drinking a Cigar City Maduro Brown in celebration of the day of my birth.
Had a really great pediatrics clinical day. Go figure! Had a 22-month old patient with a g-tube and chronic lung disease who was so sweet...once you got past the screeching separation anxiety. It was a total care day - I took care of his every need from cuddling to diaper changes to feedings to meds to documentation. I feel good. :)

Oh, and the car guy left me a voicemail again. That's stretching the boundary a bit. Definitely not calling him back now.

    Happy birthday!

My mom purchased a new car about a year before my dad passed. The young man who sold it to her stopped by about three days later and stated he needed to check the VIN. She let him and all seemed normal. Two days later he needed to check something else, then again the next day. My dad was not always on top of things at this point at all but noticed he needed to use the restroom each time and asked "you don't think he's stealing our medication do you?" My mom thought that sounded nuts, said we live a half hour out of town the kid probably just needs to "get rid of some coffee" when he gets here. Then asked "why would he want our medication?" "Well we both have pain pills we take. I heard on the news kids take them now for fun." My mom thought my dads was being a bit out of it but checked the medicine cabinet just to be sure. Dad was right and both of their medications were down to one pill. I ended up on the phone with my mom not long after and she said she'd never heard of people using pain medication for recreation. I told her "you don't watch much news do you." "Nope, hate it." I asked if they called the police, they had. The kid ended up getting three years and lost custody of his son.

You know they keep trying to rewrite agreements they made years ago. I remember many times getting nothing more for a new contract agreement then a promise of earlier or better retirement. Often my co-works would want to strike. I always figured it was money in the bank. The problem was the State made too many of these "we'll give you more... umm, but later" deals and now the balance sheets are not so well balanced. which is why there's a tier one and tier two now. I now hear talk of a tier three, pity those poor bastards.

There was a group, mainly driven by one man in Eugene, who sued over the way they calculated COLA's or something not long after I retired. He won. My benefit went up less then $100 a month. I thought it would be better if the system were more liquid then getting some small raise today. Which is exactly why I'm fine with them taking 18 months to repay me money I didn't know I was missing. These folks who want it all and want it right now make no sense to me. What happened when they bend the system to point of breaking? We'll all end up like United Airline pilots and get pennies on the dollar each month.

Well, and those of us trying to get into that system are basically getting stuck with a 401k.
