I would probably choose the 60s, when things were new, plentiful, and we were stoopid re the environment. I mean, really, the innocence cant be beat. The future was fab, except for the womens/civil rights movement and some of those, withoutadoubt, dire circumstances. However, it certainly called one's attention to the awful social digress (?!). I like that people stood up and assembled, unionized (way before, too). I like that women were the colloquial woman and that they also stood up for themselves. I like that races called attention to themselves, and the the "little guy" rose up a little with them. I like the allpointy bras of the generation and the burning of them. I like that garters were worn on an everyday basis. I like the pinup girls and Playboy clubs, sort of. Antibiotics were alltherage, as was Valium. I like midcentury art when done well, especially the architecture There was a newness, I guess, Its a little before my time, but when I hear people talk, I want to get naked outside and listen to Jimi Hendrix. Of course, Im not innocent of Vietnam history or the horrible deaths re raciam, and and Ive read about the ramifications of Studio 51 (although that may be the 70s?), and so forth. All the hideousness of the fight. But, there is something about those 60s that appeal to me, and although Im not a Mad Men girl, I probably should be.

When would you have liked ot have lived,

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

I'd like to go back and see the Middle Ages, say around the time of the Hundred Years War but I sure as hell wouldn't want to live there!
The 60s are very interesting to me as well. I think they fit my pace better than current times?

  3. I want to live in the late Paleozoic Era and witness the Permian-Triassic extinction event.
Now I realize that the event itself may have taken a few million years so just put me where the action is.
Can I bring anyone with me?

Since I'm both a teacher and student of history, it's often difficult for me to decide when it comes to these questions. There are many spans of time that I would have liked to witness:

    Rome at its height
    the French Revolution
    the Tokugawa/Edo period
the War of the Roses, culminating in the Battle of Bosworth
Westward Expansion in the United States
    the Roaring 20s

I don't know that I would want to experience the 60s--my dad has lots of stories, and I feel like that's sufficient enough for me.

my sense of other eras i might like to live in is limited by my liking of indoor plumbing and electricity.

maybe mid-to-late 40s nyc under the assumption that i'd have been hip enough to like bop and would look good in a zoot suit.

France in the 30s. I'd want to hang out with Henry Miller.

Unless you're transformed into a sturdy white male, you're probably going to have a bad time exploring these places.

Being a woman or minority before the 1970s, I suspect, would suck a fat one. In many ways.

I like today. We're more equal. And because science.

HAH! You're such a classy mofo, Chuck. It's why I like you.

  10. Even as a sturdy while male I wouldn't be able to explore these places because at my age I'd already be dead then. :p

I'll stay right here with central air, color TV, indoor plumbing, phenomenal medical care, and the innerwebs. Really everything we have now is what these previous eras were striving for. Besides the 60s were basically boring.

My time period would have to be during 1860's out West, right after the Civil War.
So many characters I would love to meet. See if they lived up to their legends.

Focus man! skanky French prostitutes, hard liquor and living large like a hobo Henry Miller!

Spend your days writing hard or hitting your friends up for money. The rest of the time is between Anais Nin's knees.

I'd like to pop over to the early 90s so I can have sex with Rollins before he got less angry.

    Yeah, that's my only motivation.

    I'd probably make myself about 10 years older...a kid in the 70s, a teenager in the 80s, a 20-something in the 90s.

Then again, the '40s would be pretty rad, too.

Frankly, I don't think I could live in just one Era...if I had some choice, they are all interesting to me.

But if I was limited to one choice and had to go back...
since I've been a fan of the US's Founding Fathers, I'd go back to the Declaration/Constitution time...but only if I could be in the thick of the process. (like Washington's right hand man...or such)

If I got to keep my skills and knowledge...perhaps I could go back to medieval times.
Do the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court thing. Leverage my know-how but isolated, so I wouldn't change science history.

But I know that going back isn't what was portrayed in the stories, there are many negative aspects too. Lack of medicine and such.

Or maybe go back and meet Da Vinci...maybe assist him. (He had connections. ;))
Meet a guy that reflects the true Renaissance Man...science, engineering, art, politics, philosophy and so much more.
