  1. Strange Famous

Strange Famous it depends on who is looking...

    Location:
    Ipswich, UK
    Definitely Subway

You get some salad on it so you can convince yourself its somewhat healthy, and it tastes lovely.

I always have the same order:

Foot long club with cheese on wheat bread, toasted
Lettuce, Tomato, lots of Onion, olives
    Light Mayo
A pack of cheese and onion crisps and a diet coke.

    _

The only better sandwich I had was in Raleigh Int'l airport in South Carolina, and I doubt I will go back there very often.

I don't do much fast food, but when I do I prefer Culvers! Always great food, and it was the first place the wife and I ever ate together, so it holds a little something special there. No I do better than fast food for a date. It was a first meet as friends, although things escalated very fast from there! It was pretty funny to, she spilled her soda all over the place right at the self serve fountain!

How do we define "fast food?"

I don't think of places like Chipotle Grill and Culver's as fast food, I guess partly because I never use their drivethru.

And I don't think of pizza as fast food either, since pizza is a minimum of ten-fifteen minutes.

Pretty clear that places like McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, etc., but what makes a place "fast food?"

I grew up in Chicago and there are Vienna Beef restaurants everywhere from the city to the suburbs. Hot dogs and Italian beef are the specialties. Nothing beetter than a juicy Italian beef sandwich with hot and/or sweet peppers. Perhaps a cheesy beef with mozzarella cheese or an Italian combo with a big Italian sausage added. Don't forget the onion rings or tamale on the side. A Vienna beef hot dog is great with nuclear green relish, onions, tomato slices, pickle slice, mustard, sport peppers and celery salt. NO CATSUP - considered sacreligious on a hot dog in Chicago. Catsup is only for fries, which goes great with the hot dog. This is my kind of fast food - Chicago style.

So, Chipotle would be considered "fast casual." I've never been to a Culver's, but based on their menu, it also looks like a fast casual concept.

McDonalds is fast food, or quick service: Fast food restaurant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pizza is a different category to me, simply because good pizza does not happen quickly. Even wood-fired takes time to stretch the dough properly.

This is one of the issues I have with this thread. "Fast food" limits me to major chains with drive-thrus.

When you can get your order in under 5 minutes, that's fast food. Just because it doesn't have a big national chain name attached to it does not disqualify it as fast food. It's how it's served, not what it's called.

Portillos IS fast food.... it's awesome food, but it's still fast food.

With that being said, you Chi-Town people need to experience the epic-ness of Whataburger. The west coast too, so you can finally get over your weird obsession with the grossly inferior In-N-Out...

  13. I don't believe I've ever gotten my order in under 5 minutes at a Portillos. Usually, that's at least how long I have to stand in line to place my order. :p

Ok I guess some people need things spelled out. Five minutes AFTER you place your order. And even McD's can take longer that during rush times.

One thing about living near the mall is that all of them are less than 2 minutes away from my house. Which is both a good and bad thing.

Instead of the moniker 'fast food', how 'bout take-out or take away?

I mentioned a Vietnamese place I like. I phone in my order, they always reply "10 minutes" and I drive over and pick up & bring it home. I can do the same with a 'good' pizza. Call ahead, order, etc.
Now a sit down joint may have some take out items but often not the entire menu. I would use that to distinguish between so-called fast food and not-fast food.
Many fast food restaurants have been going though a major transition in what they serve and how they serve it so it's no wonder that it is hard to define what constitutes fast food.

Drive up/thru has nothing to do with it. In a ritzy town down the road, zoning laws prohibit both MacDonald's and Burger King from having a drive thru.

  17. Discovered a new sub place in the "Further Great White North" called Cousin's. They're a not-national-but-not-local sandwich shop, they're less expensive than Jimmy Johns and, for my money, much more tasty. If they delivered I'd never have to go to Subway or Jimmy Johns or Quizno's again.
