(CNN) -- James Gandolfini, best known for his role as an anxiety-ridden mob boss on HBO's "The Sopranos," died in Italy, possibly of a heart attack, the actor's managers said Wednesday. He was 51.

"It is with immense sorrow that we report our client, James Gandolfini. passed away today while on holiday in Rome, Italy," managers Mark Armstrong and Nancy Sanders said in a joint statement. "Our hearts are shattered and we will miss him deeply. He and his family were part of our family for many years and we are all grieving."

The actor had been scheduled to make an appearance at the Taormina Film Fest in Sicily this week.
Gandolfini won three Emmy Awards for his portrayal of Tony Soprano, the angst-ridden mob boss who visited a therapist and took Prozac while knocking off people. "The Sopranos" aired from 1999 to 2007.

The role I associate with him immediately is Fallen, I watched that when it was first released and liked it very much. Never have seen any of this Sopranos show yet.

    edit: grammatical fix

Just heard, that's sad. A good actor, and a good guy. But that will happen to us all

Unfortunate news. I may not have enjoyed The Sopranos series finale, but J.G did an excellent job playing a mob boss.

    I was hoping for a Soprano's 3D mega-movie trilogy.

    Not without Tony, they don't.

Sad news. Yeah, 51 is definitely too young to go.

Agreed. I always hoped for a big screen Bada Bing but not now. No Tony, no go. Just wouldn't work.

And yes by all reports the man was all class. When he got big increase in salary one season he split it evenly with his co-stars.

I guess that the good ones do die young. Very sad. Did he have heart problems and did he address those?

Don't know about James but end stage cardiac disease is what killed John Candy at 43.

Well, sadly both guys were huge. Big dogs don't live to be very old. He's in a better place, IMHO.

I watched the first couple episodes of Sopranos in remembrance of him.

I found it kind of sadly ironic that the first scene in the series Gandolfini is most known for is him recounting a scene where he had shortness of breath, collapsed, and passed out.
