Legalizing same-sex marriage: Domino effect?

Seems like most of the posts here support same-sex marriage. Well I think it is absolutely disgusting and short-sighted to...not agree whole heartedly with these posts. I don't know how some of the arguements against gay marriage are even considered. "It will ruin the sanctity of marriage"..? Huh? Marriage is about two people loving each enough to commit to be with each other forever..how does the gender of anyone even matter? (I'm not going to go into the religious views about this as I'll rant forever on that). Anyway, I look forward to a world where acceptance of all is the norm.

    But we love rants!

But, yes, arguments that it will "ruin the sanctity of marriage" or that it will "ruin the integrity of family values" are ridiculous. It assumes that LGBT couples aren't living in de facto marriages or that they don't have families of their own. *facepalm* The issue is that these folks aren't afforded the same rights as straight folks. Period. That is, in terms of legitimizing their relationships and families through the tradition of marriage.

I mean, it's not like we haven't seen this kind of thing before. Women voting and entering the workforce? It will ruin the integrity of politics and commerce! Blacks voting and attending the same schools as whites? It will ruin the integrity of politics and education!

This leads to my favourite argument: "It's not a rights issue! People don't choose to be women! People don't choose to be black! People choose to be gay! People choose a gay lifestyle! And they want to 'normalize' it! It's all part of the gay agenda!"

    ORLY?

The Boy Scouts of America just voted to allow openly gay youth to participate, over the very strenuous objection of the Southern Baptist. I'm hoping that's some kind of tipping point. I think same sex marriage is a matter of when, not if. We just have to wait for the old haters to die, but it can't be soon enough as far as I'm concerned.I think some of the more pragmatic will start changing their minds, like they did with immigration. When they realize they can't win an election as long as they keep their old outdated ideas.

This is definitely one of the topics not to have a conversation in our house. Me = atheist, my wife = Christian. She has very strong views on the religious importance of marriage, and there is no changing that POV. I would just be asking for trouble bringing it up. She knows my position and I think we have tacitly agreed never to speak on it again, for the benefit of *our* marriage.

Wow. My wife has some different opinions from mine but I don't know that I could be married to someone so fundamentally different from me.

Why? All the research on families and parenting supports two parent households regardless of the gender makeup of the two parents. It's all about resources. Kids who have two parents have more resources at their disposal--economically, socially, and emotionally.

"We'll look the other way until you're 18. Once you're an adult, fuck you, you're on your own."
The people who think they have a monopoly on marriage can't accept anything that subjugates traditional gender roles - their definition of marriage is necessary to preserve their medieval views of the "proper" roles of men and women in the family and life in general. If they recognized the right of a couple other than a man and a woman (and we're talking strictly biological sex, don't even try to tell them that the modern perception of gender has changed since the 1500s,) they would have to recognize it as a partnership between two equal individuals, and they're not willing to do that.

The US Supreme Court will have a lot to say on the issue...as early as next Monday but definitely by the end of the month, when it rules on two cases -- the constitutionality of California Prop 8 ban on same sex marriage and the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that bars same sex couple legally married where permitted under state law but denied hundreds of federal benefits.

Absolutely a big deal. But the biggest dominoes remain. Organizations like Family Research Council, American Family Association and other conservative Christian groups that have threatened to abandon the Republican Party if the party softens its position on gay marriage.

In April in response, the RNC reaffirmed its support of a Constitutional amendment to define marriage as only between a man and a woman.

And these groups are now threatening to "defy" the Supreme Court if the Court rules in favor of marriage equality in either of the two pending cases.

What can they do other than continue to incite their followers with their ignorant and intolerant rhetoric?

They can, and will continue to incite their followers to greater heights of ignorance and fear. And the rest of us will leave them behind. Like we left behind the raciest of old. Unfortunately, there will always be bigots, but they will be angry old people that no one pays any attention to. We still have raciest, but they get fired when they say the N word. Soon there will be a day when a bigot is fired for saying the F word.

DOMA is unconstitutional! With a 5-4 decision, the Supreme Court of the United States declared that "DOMA singles out a class of persons deemed by a State entitled to recognition and protection to enhance their own liberty."

Decision on Hollingsworth v. Perry: http://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/12pdf/12-144_8ok0.pdf

"We have never before upheld the standing of a private party to defend the constitutionality of a state statute when state officials have chosen not to. We decline to do so for the first time here."

Same sex marriage is expected to resume in California once the governor and attorney general set a date.
