I am a mason. Many of y'all know that. I have an emblem on the back of my truck and someone at a red light today told me I was racist because I am a Mason. I just laughed.
    Is anyone here a mason?
What does the picture mean to you?
What do you know about it?
Were any of your relatives one?

It's the symbol for the Masons. Unless someone is saying that the Masons are racists (which is new to me), you ran into someone ignorant.

I'm not a Mason, but my dad is a sometime member. I think that my maternal great-grandfather was a fairly high level Mason, though.

There are lots of conspiracy theories surrounding the Masons, but I've never heard racism as being one of them.

I'll be honest, I don't know much about the Masons.

I DO know that Jack Chick (of Chick Tract fame...or is that infamy?) despises Masons, so I'm probably pretty okay with them.

A friend of mine is a Mason, as is my godfather.

To me, Masons do a lot of good work. I know philanthropy is a huge part of what they do. I would've never assumed Masons are racist. I think it was a display of ignorance for that person to say so to you.

I'm not a Mason, but I do recognize the symbol. I don't know much about Masons other than that a whole bunch of famous people throughout history (especially those involved in the US's founding) were Masons. I know they must believe there is a Higher Power, though I'm pretty sure they don't have to profess to be Christian. I know there are various levels. I know lots of Masons will seek other Masons out to do business with, and many are involved in local charity work. I don't think any of my close relatives are/were Masons, but I know my wife's grandfather was one. After his regular funeral service they had a second, closed service for those of his friends who were Masons.

I've never associated Masons with racism.

He apparently thinks being a Mason means being a Satanist. Or a witch. I'm not sure which one. But he also thinks Dungeons and Dragons is a gateway to Satanism, Catholics are evil, and Halloween tempts children into witchcraft, so that should give you an idea of the kind of things he believes.

fflowley Don't just do something, stand there!

My dad was a Mason and we're Jewish so it's definitely not a christian-only club.
All I can remember is charitable events he participated in. I must have missed all the good stuff, like racism and Satan worship.

I suspect blacks were excluded from becoming Masons throughout much of the organization's history as were women (still?). But certainly, the Masons arent alone is these practices.

Personally, I'm not one for organizations with rituals (secret passwords, handshakes, oaths, blackballing prospective members, etc), but to each his own.

I agree they do some fine charitable work.
