I really enjoyed it, especially the clever call-backs to a certain other Trek movie that I don't want to spoil. Yes, it was more action than exploration (looks like that's the next film!) but all of the character's motivations suited their actions and the stakes were just high enough.

I'm really glad they didn't make it into a straight up 9-11 movie like the trailers and posters hinted at.

Something that this movie inspired me to do that the first one didn't, is scour the web to get all the references I missed. Every time a minor character was introduced or a ship or planet was named my ears pricked up to try and place it. Take the USS Bradbury for example!

On a side note, you know what's missing from modern Trek that is a huge element in contemporary sci-fi? Augmented reality a la Google glasses and the Internet. Everything I'm reading lately has characters deeply plugged into the web and getting feedback to implants or contacts and whatnot. They should start folding that stuff in now as I feel we're not so far away from Geordie's fancy eyballs.

Maybe I've been reading too much "hard" sci-fi lately but the Enterprise is sorely lacking in safety equipment. With all those catwalks and large open spaces they should really have more safety netting and padding. Those hand rails just don't cut it.

I still have not seen this film. I really want to.

Just took the boys to see this last weekend at the IMAX in 3D and it was amazing! I don't often see movies at the IMAX or 3D cause of the cost, but this was well worth it. I really enjoyed the reboot, but this was on another level, IMHO. If you haven't and even a casual fan, do it!

You described my hesitation perfectly with this. I like all of the films up to ST: Nemesis, but cannot use even "casual fan" for this reboot universe overall as portrayed so far. It had serious promise but has failed to grab my interest beyond seeing Leonard and the younger actor portrayals.
I will give this new one a try when it hits redbox on the strength of having the 21st century Sherlock as the villian.
